Es un enorme y marchoso oso gris. Él y Mowgli se encuentran por casualidad en la selva y los dos se hacen rápidamente amigos, y Mowgli le empieza a llamar "Papá Oso". Él y Bagheera discuten mucho, aunque en realidad son grandes amigos. Es el personaje más loco de la selva (a excepción del Rey Louie).
Phil Harris, el actor que dobla la voz a Baloo en inglés, también pone voz a Thomas O'Malley de The Aristocats, y a Little John de Robin Hood, el cual es un oso que se creó a partir del físico de Baloo.
Se cuestionaba por mucho tiempo que especie de oso era Baloo, hasta que se descubrió que estaba inspirado en un Oso Bezudo, aunque estos osos en la vida real no se parecen nada a Baloo.
Baloo, es el único oso de Disney que apareció como personaje jugable en la saga de Disney INFINITY.
