Ego es proveniente de la raza Celestial, de entidades primordiales inmortales con poderes cósmicos, que tiene la capacidad de manipular la materia y la energía a un nivel atómico. También puede invocar a avatares humanoides para aparecer como él desea y viajar por el universo. A lo largo de la película, se toma una apariencia humanoide. Es el padre de Star-Lord, y también el amo personal de Mantis. Ego ha viajado lo largo de muchos años a través de la galaxia y plantado las semillas para extender su influencia y poder sobre todo el universo. Contrató a Yondu Udonta para recoger a estos niños sólo si tenían poderes celestiales. Todos los niños fueron asesinados y desechados en un agujero más alejado del planeta. Peter es el único hijo de haber heredado las habilidades de su padre y Ego quería utilizar los poderes de Peter ya que necesitaba a dos individuos que poseían poderes celestiales para que esas semillas en cada planeta crezcan y conquistara el universo. Ego confesó haber matado a la madre de Peter, Meredith, mediante la plantación de un tumor provocándole un cáncer en ella y se quitó la vida, cuando Quill era todavía un niño. Enfurecido, Peter usó sus poderes celestiales para luchar contra Ego mientras que el resto de los Guardianes lo matan por la colocación de una bomba en su cerebro, en el centro del planeta y al final es destruido.
