La Hidra es una gran serpiente de múltiples cabezas que aparece en la película de Disney de 1997, Hércules. En la película, la Hidra es la primera de una serie de monstruos que Hades envía para derrotar a Hércules, utilizando a la bestia como una contienda fija para destruir al joven héroe. Sin embargo, aunque la Hidra desarrollaba más cabezas a una velocidad que la que él podía cortar, el poderoso Hércules logra derrotar al monstruo, lo que le valió la fama y la adoración de los ciudadanos de Tebas.

Hades le tiende una trampa a Hércules, cuando este rescata a dos niños que en realidad son Pena y Pánico de un desprendimiento, y hace que aparezca la Hidra. Hércules lucha con ella y le corta la cabeza, y cuando este piensa que ha acabado con la bestia, surgen otras tres cabezas. Es derrotada cuando Hércules destruye una montaña y hace que las piedras caigan sobre la Hidra.

Entre bastidores
Gerald Scarfe diseñó la Hidra para la película de 1997. Scarfe proporcionó dibujos preliminares para dotar a la mítica bestia de sus colmillos y cuellos serpentinos necesarios antes de transferir el trabajo al equipo de animación por computadora dirigido por Roger Gould. Sobre el diseño de la Hidra, Gould explicó que se trataba de una serpiente con una cabeza que combinaba la de una serpiente de cascabel y la de un mono. La Hidra se esculpió en un modelo de arcilla cuyas dimensiones se digitalizaron en las computadoras para crear un modelo de estructura alámbrica con el que se animó al monstruo.
Al comienzo de la producción, los realizadores decidieron que la Hidra tendría treinta cabezas, de las cuales los animadores crearon una cabeza maestra y la computadora podría multiplicar las cabezas hasta alcanzar la escala deseada. La Hidra es la única renderizada en CGI, a diferencia del resto de la película, que es animación dibujada a mano. Esto se hizo porque habría sido increíblemente difícil dibujar cada cabeza individualmente.
Los animadores CGI dedicaron entre 6 y 14 horas a renderizar un fotograma de la Hidra, dependiendo de cuántas cabezas tuviera.
En total, trece animadores y directores técnicos pasaron casi un año y medio creando la secuencia de batalla de cuatro minutos de la película.
Cuando la Hidra mordió la roca por la mitad, su risa fue el gruñido de un hipopótamo.
Aunque técnicamente no está en su diseño, la Hidra de Hércules fue descrita como un dragón o "similar a un dragón" en varios libros de Disney, incluidos Disney's Hercules: Classic Storybook , Disney's Hercules: I Made Herc a Hero, por Phil , Handsome Heroes and Vile Villains: Men in Disney's Feature Animation y The Art of Disney's Dragons .
