Never Judge a Hyena by its Spots es el primer episodio de la serie animada de Disney JuniorThe Lion Guard. Se estrenó el 15 de Enero de 2016 junto con "The Rise of Makuu".
Janja, Cheezi y Chungu están atacando una manada de gacelas. Antes de que puedan derribar el rebaño, la Guardia León llega al rescate del rebaño. Kion le recuerda al trío que les dijo que se quedaran fuera de las Tierras del Reino. Janja dice en broma: "Mi estómago sigue olvidándose", a la diversión de Cheezi y Chungu. Esto incita a Kion a gritar enojado "AHORA!". Percibiendo el peligro, Janja ordena a los otros que se retiren. Kion ordena al resto de la Guardia que calme al rebaño mientras él persigue. Él entonces carga después de las hienas y los persigue todo el camino de regreso a las Lejanías. Pero mientras está parado en el tronco, se rompe bajo su peso y lo envía al río. Cuando el resto de la Guardia, que ha conseguido calmar a la manada, nota que Kion no ha vuelto todavía, y van a buscarlo. Cuando descubren la situación de su amigo, inmediatamente actúan para salvarlo. Bunga salta al agua para rescatarlo con Beshte saltando después de Bunga, sabiendo que la corriente es demasiado fuerte.
Kion logra salir a salvo del lado del río de las Lejanías. Ono se abalanza para comprobar en el cachorro sinuoso. Kion le dice a los otros miembros de la Guardia que se reúnan con él en la Roca Plana Alta, donde volverá a entrar en las Tierras del Reino después de navegar a través de las Lejanías, debido a la actual corriente del río que era demasiado fuerte para cruzar con seguridad. Bunga afirma saber dónde está, y lidera el camino. Kion le dice a Ono que vaya con ellos para asegurar su seguridad antes de entrar en las Lejanías. En el camino, Kion conoce a un cachorro de hiena llamado Jasiri que lo reconoce y le dice que va por el camino equivocado. Kion la ignora por desconfianza y sigue adelante. Mientras tanto, Bunga está tratando de llevar al resto de la Guardia a la Roca Plana Alta con Beshte lamentando que Kion no está allí para dirigirlos. Después de algunos contratiempos, incluyendo una carrera con Ushari, Bunga finalmente admite que están perdidos, a la molestia de los otros tres. Después de que Ono encuentra su salida de la selva, le piden direcciones a una cebra, pero tampoco sabe dónde está la Roca Plana Alta, para su molestia. Beshte sugiere preguntar a Mbeya el Rinoceronte por las direcciones y la cabeza para el agujero de riego. Mientras tanto en las Lejanías, Kion sigue desconfiando de Jasiri a pesar de que no está con Janja y sigue su propio camino. Pronto cae en un arbusto de espinas y se queda atascado en él. Jasiri lo ayuda a salir y lo lleva a la Roca Plana Alta.
Mientras tanto, en el agujero de riego, Beshte ha tenido una larga conversación con Mbeya. Cuando finalmente regresa, le dice a sus amigos que Mbeya olvidó cubrirse para protegerse de las quemaduras de sol el día anterior. Cuando Fuli pide las direcciones, Beshte responde que no necesita instrucciones para un baño de barro. Esto hace que el guepardo molesto quiera decir que ella se refería a las indicaciones de la Roca Plana Alta, a las que el hipopótamo admite tímidamente que se olvidó de pedirlas y vuelve a buscarlas. Después de viajar a través de un pantano, finalmente encuentran el camino a la Roca Plana Alta. Cuando llegan allí, Bunga intenta afirmar que ha estado allí cientos de veces y sabe un gran atajo, pero los otros gritan "BUNGA" de tal manera que deja muy claro que no le creen.
Mientras tanto, en las Lejanías, Jasiri le dice a Kion que la mayoría de las hienas, especialmente su desaprobación de los caminos de Janja y realmente respetan el Ciclo de la Vida tanto como él y son muy similares a los leones. Cuando llegan al territorio de Janja habían dos caminos. Después de que Kion se vaya, Janja y su clan aparecen y atacan a Jasiri. Kion vuelve a ayudarla a luchar contra ellos y los empuja con el Rugido. La Guardia del León llega para ayudar a Kion. Al principio, consideran a Jasiri como una amenaza y se preparan para luchar contra ella. Pero Kion les impide revelar que es una amiga y cómo se ayudaron mutuamente. Kion vuelve a las Tierras del Reino con el resto de la Guardia del León, que están felices de tenerlo de vuelta.

Jasiri es la primera hiena de la franquicia de The Lion King en ser protagonista. Esto se debe al racismo implícito de la primera película, ya que los críticos habían asumido que las hienas como villanos y la prejiduce de los leones contra ellos promovían el racismo y la discriminación.
