Disney reveló que anteriormente se iba a llamar Thor y sólo iba a tener una cornamenta, pero, el diseño fue descartado y el nombre cambiado para evitar confusiones con el superhéroe de Marvel del mismo nombre.

Los realizadores invitaron a un reno real a los Walt Disney Animation Studios para observar su constitución física y gestos, que luego caricaturizaron para dar vida a Sven.
Los realizadores observaron que el comportamiento de Sven se basara en la de un perro (o un Labrador para ser más precisos) para dar una ilusión más fuerte de fiel compañero animal, lo cual fue sencillo debido a su especie, ya que los renos en realidad jadean al igual que los caninos. Los renos de verdad también rascan la parte posterior de las orejas con sus piernas, al igual que los perros.
