Inspiracją do powstania tej piosenki były autentyczne wydarzenia z 1947 roku, w którym pociągi od Ameryki do Europy, zwane jako "pociągi przyjaźni", zawoziły żywność po drugiej wojnie światowej do mieszkańców Francji i Włoch. Symbolizowały one gest dobrej woli dla innych ludzi.
