"A Career to Remember" is the second segment of the twenty-eighth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

The Gang ponder on what they want to be when they grow up, and Spinelli fears she may not have a future.

Plot[]

It is Career Day and the kids and faculty are gathered to hear from people with jobs to talk about what they do. While everyone is interested, Spinelli is indifferent. The last speaker is a man named Pat Patterson who goes up to talk about how he runs a company that sells shoes that prevent gum from sticking to the bottom. However, he appears to panic and runs away before he can say anything, leaving all the kids flummoxed. The Recess Gang gather with everyone, sans Spinelli, talking about what they would like to do when they grow up.

Vince wants to go pro and join the space leagues, Mikey wants to be a traveling bard, Gretchen wants to clone herself to fulfill numerous tasks, Gus wants to be like his dad and join the army, and T.J. wants to be president and his favorite superhero Señor Fusion. Spinelli finds their future interests dumb, which concerns them as they believe that if she does not plan her future, she will not know what to do with herself. That night, Spinelli has a nightmare that she is homeless and all of her friends have achieved their goals.

Spinelli awakens and rushes to school where she runs into Patterson's limo and blames him for how she is feeling. Patterson sits her down and tells her that he spent years not knowing what to do with himself and tried numerous jobs when he suddenly stepped in gum and decided to invent shoes that were immune to them. He adds that she does not need to know what to do in the future right now because she is still a kid. Spinelli heads to school where she apologizes for how she has been acting and suggests that they all play together.

Trivia[]

  • Moral: Kids aren't obligated to think about their future or decide right away what they grow up to be. Even when you reach the point you're grown and ready for a career, your future isn't set in stone.
  • On Disney+ and outside the U.S., this episode is second next to "Kindergarten Derby".
  • Spinelli says that she cannot draw the donkey, yet she is shown to be a proficient artist in "Spinelli's Masterpiece".
