Lyrics
(Introduction in Sing-Along Songs: Heigh Ho, but not in Sing Along Songs: Little Patch of Heaven)
Professor Owl: (spoken) Singing is fun when you know how to read. Roberta Robin, please proceed.
Roberta: (spoken) Johnny lives in a big city, but has everything a cowboy could want.
Canary Sisters/Chorus: Everything, everything
Roberta: (spoken) He has a place to pan for gold.
Chorus: Panning, panning
Roberta: (spoken) And he has time to shoot a buffalo every day.
Chorus: Shootin', shootin'
Roberta: (spoken) And every night, he dreams he's a cowboy riding the range.
Chorus: Ew-wee, ew-wee, ew-wee, ew-wee...
Ridin', ridin' along...
Oh, a cowboy needs a horse, needs a horse, needs a horse
And he's gotta have a rope, have a rope, have a rope
And he oughta' have a song, have a song, have a song
If he wants to keep ridin'
Now a cowboy needs a hat, needs a hat, needs a hat
And a pair of fancy boots, fancy boots, fancy boots
And a set of shiny spurs, shiny spurs, shiny spurs
If he wants to keep ridin'
Oh, the fence is long, and the sun is hot
And the good Lord knows that a cowboy's gotta keep
Ridin', ridin' along
So he gets himself a horse, and a rope, and a song
And he finds himself a hat, fancy boots, shiny spurs
And there's nothing more he needs, or can have, or can get
If he wants to keep ridin', ridin' along...
(long instrumental verse not in Sing-Along Songs version)
(part of ending verse not in Sing Along Songs version)
Ew-wee, ew-wee, ew-wee, ew-wee
Ridin', ridin' along...
(retained in in Sing Along Songs version)
Spurs, shiny spurs...
Boots, fancy boots ...
Sings a western song...
Rope, oh, oh, oh...
And a horse ...
If he wants to keep ridin', ridin' along...
This is the version sung by such singers as Roy Rogers
Oh, a cowboy needs a horse,
Needs a horse, needs a horse,
And a cowboy needs a hat,
Needs a hat, needs a hat,
And he's gotta have a rope,
Have a rope, have a rope,
If he wants to keep a-ridin'.
Now a cowboy needs some boots,
Fancy boots, fancy boots,
And a set of shiny spurs,
Shiny spurs, shiny spurs,
And he's gotta have a song,
Have a song, have a song,
If he wants to keep a-ridin'.
Oh, the fence is long, and the sun is hot,
And the Good Lord knows that a cowboy's gotta
Keep a-ridin', ridin' along.
Now if a cowboy's got a horse,
And a hat, and a rope,
And a pair of fancy boots,
Shiny spurs, and a song,
Then there's very little else
In this world that he needs
If he wants to keep a-ridin',
Ridin' along.
Trivia
- When the song was shown in Disney Sing Along Songs, the Native American verse and the bandit verse are all omitted, because both of them have no lines sung at. This is to shorten the song.
- In the Sing-Along Songs version, a student of Professor Owl, Roberta Robin, introduces the song while The Canary Sisters, taking the place of the chorus accompanying the narration. However, this is only in the "Heigh Ho" volume.
