"A Genius Among Us" is the second segment of the twenty-seventh episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
Gretchen discovers that Hank the janitor is a math genius.
Plot[]
Gretchen is having trouble trying to solve a difficult equation and leaves it on Miss Grotke's chalkboard to see if she can help, though she and the rest of the class are just as stumped. Everyone leaves for the day, but upon returning discover that someone managed to solve it. No one knows who, though Phil tries to claim credit for it, only to admit that he was lying. The Recess Gang decide to set up another equation and wait and see what happens. After Randall comes in and steals Vince's gum, followed by Principal Prickly who was also looking to steal it, Hank the janitor arrives and easily solves the equation with little to no effort.
Gretchen approaches Hank on his math skills and he admits that he likes to solve equations for fun. Impressed, she invites him to join her math club after school. The club simply consists of the two of them with the rest of the Gang sleeping through it. Soon, Gretchen and Hank begin spending more time together much to the irritation of the rest of the Gang. They begin to question why Hank would get a job as a janitor instead of something else and he admits that he is unsure himself. Believing that Hank is sad and Gretchen unable to do anything about it, the Gang decide to spread Hank's math knowledge online to see if anyone will notice.
The next day at school, a university professor, an army general and two scientists in a teleportation bubble suddenly show up, asking Hank to join one of them due to his impressive math skills. Hank cannot make a decision and heads to the heating room. Gretchen follows and she tells him that he should follow his heart. After some thought, Hank returns and turns them all down as while all those jobs sound fun, he feels that working on any of them will turn it into work which would make math not fun for him. All parties leave and Hank thanks Gretchen for giving him the confidence to decide for himself.
