"A Great State Fair" is the first segment of the forty-ninth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

Gus gets left behind, along with Gelman and Finster when Gus' dad forgets to give him his permission slip to his first great state fair.

Plot[]

The kids are getting ready for their field trip to the fair, something which Gus is especially looking forward to as his constant moving has resulted in him not staying around long enough to experience one. However, he is shocked to discover that his father forgot to return his permission slip to him that morning. He has no way to contact him and his mother is also out. T.J. attempts to bribe Miss Grotke into letting Gus come, but to no avail. He is forced to stay at school with Miss Finster and Gelman, the latter of whom is unable to go because his "old man don't believe in fairs. He says their fixed!"

The rest of the gang head to the fair, but T.J. refuses to give up on helping Gus and tries to look for a way to bring there. He initially settles on using a "homing pigeon" that he found in a cage, but Gretchen informs him that he let out a magician's dove by mistake. Back at the school, Finster has Gus and Gelman play board games and has them perform the "Otter Dance", which Gelman refuses to learn because his "old man don't believe in otters". Gus later learns that both Gelman and Finster do have a desire to go to the fair, but Gelman's father and Finster having to stay behind all the time prevent them from doing so.

T.J. is inspired by a morse code display to create a signal to get help. The gang construct a satellite that manages to send their message out, across the ocean line, informed of Gus' predicament. It finally reached Lt. Griswald who realizes his blunder. Just as Gus, Gelman and Finster give up on wanting to go, Gus' father arrives via helicopter to take his son to the fair. Gus, not wanting to leave a man behind, invites Gelman to come along who reluctantly agrees. Finster too also gives in. The mission is a success with Gus and Gelman joining the rest of T.J. and the gang at the attractions while Lt. Griswald shows off his helicopter to some of the students.
