"A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time" is the seventeenth episode of Gargoyles, and the twelfth single-part episode of the series. It aired on September 7, 1995.

Plot

MacBeth steals a set of scrolls written by Merlin, believing they hold spells. Meanwhile, Hudson befriends a blind writer named Jeffrey Robbins who teaches the value of reading to the illiterate old warrior. When the gargoyles confront MacBeth for the scrolls, he's learned the scrolls are Merlin's diary. Goliath threatens to burn them as he thinks they contain spells, but MacBeth has no qualms as there is no magic.

However, Broadway and Hudson convince them the scrolls are magic - "when you read them, they take you there." Seeing they're right, MacBeth allows them to leave in peace. Goliath offers to read to Hudson; however, Hudson wishes to read them once he learns how.

Later, Jeffrey finds himself inspired by news of the scrolls, beginning a new book; the episode ends with Hudson listening in on the beginning, which contains wisdom about books themselves.

Quotes

  • Jeffrey: "The written word is all that stands between memory and oblivion. Without books, we are neither teaching nor learning; we are cast adrift. Books are windows to the past, mirrors to the present, and prisms reflecting all possible futures. Books are lighthouses in the dark sea of time."

Trivia

  • The episode title is a misnomer to trick the viewer into thinking time travel is involved. However, it's actually taken from Jeffrey's quotation at the end of the episode, where he describes books.
  • Hudson and Broadway don't know how to read, but the rest of the clan does.
