- “Is that all you've got?”
- ―Abomination confronting Hulk.
Abomination (real name Emil Blonsky) is a soldier-turned-monstrosity by gamma radiation, and is the evil counterpart of Hulk.
The Abomination was created by Stan Lee and Gil Kane.
Background[]
Personality[]
Abomination is a Gamma villain. He was a soldier before being turned into a monster. Unlike the Hulk whose anger makes him strong. Abomination is super strong from the start. He has military, strategy, and survivor skills on top of his superhuman strength. Compared to the Hulk he is much smarter than him.
Powers and abilities[]
The gamma radiation that mutated the Abomination's body fortified his cellular structure and added, from some as the yet unknown source, over 2000 pounds of bone marrow and tissue to his body. Unlike the Hulk's, the Abomination's transformation has proved stable; he cannot change back and forth between his human state and his superhuman state.
- Superhuman Strength: The Abomination possesses vast extraordinary superhuman strength, enabling him to lift somewhere in excess of 500 tons. Although the Abomination's strength surpasses that of the Hulk at the Hulk's normal "calm" functional level, the Hulk has a specially adapted adrenal gland whose secretions trigger the release of far greater amounts of physical strength to correspond to his emotional state, while the Abomination does not. Hence, the Abomination's strength does not fluctuate like the Hulk's. His fists are capable of striking with a maximum force equivalent to 500 pounds of TNT. The Abomination's great strength also extends into the highly developed and powerful muscles of his legs, enabling him to leap great distances. He can jump 870 feet straight into the air. He has been known to cover a distance of 2 miles in a single bound.
- Superhuman Stamina: The Abomination's highly advanced musculature produces vastly fewer fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human. He is capable of physically exerting himself at peak capacity for several days before the buildup of fatigue toxins in his blood begins to impair him.
- Superhuman Durability: In addition to great strength, the Abomination's bodily tissues are substantially harder and more resistant to injury than the tissues of an ordinary human. The Abomination's skin is capable of withstanding great heat without blistering, up to 3,500 Fahrenheit, great cold without freezing, down to -175 Fahrenheit, and great impacts without injury. His body is also capable of withstanding tremendous impact forces, such as artillery shells and powerful energy blasts, without sustaining injury.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite his great physical resilience, it is possible to injure him. However, he possesses an accelerated healing factor similar to that possessed by the Hulk. As a result, he is capable of regenerating great amounts of damaged or destroyed tissue with much greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human. While the full extent of his healing powers are unknown, they are inferior to those of the Hulk since the Hulk's healing powers, much like his strength, increases as he becomes angrier. The Abomination is also immune to all known Earthly diseases and infections.
- Underwater Breathing: The Abomination's lung capacity is higher than the Hulk's, allowing him to breathe underwater for longer periods of time.
- Suspended Animation: Extreme pain, cold, or extended lack of oxygen can cause the Abomination to enter a coma-like state of suspended animation, in which he can survive, perhaps indefinitely.
Appearances[]
The Incredible Hulk[]
The Abomination first appeared as the main antagonist in The Incredible Hulk, as Emil Blonsky (played by Tim Roth), a soldier born in Russia but raised in England. His first mission that involved Bruce Banner/The Hulk was in Brazil, at a bottle factory. As soon as he first saw Bruce Banner as the Hulk, he slowly started getting obsessed with the Hulk. He wanted Bruce's powers, and he wanted to be like the Hulk. So after a couple of other missions after going after the Hulk, he met Samuel Sterns (played by Tim Blake Nelson), a scientist who worked at a new york university.
Emil forced Dr. Sterns to make him like the Hulk, but this ended up mutating him into the Abomination. He went on a rampage in Harlem, but got stopped by the Hulk and General Ross. Later, the "Abomination" was considered for the Avengers Initiative, as ordered by the World Security Council, but this did not happen thanks to the intervention of Coulson, Stark, and Sitwell.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
Whilst Blonsky doesn't physically appear in the series, he is referenced in the episode "T.R.A.C.K.S.". Coulson threatens to reassign Ward to Barrow, Alaska where Blonsky is being held in a cryo-cell.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings[]
Abomination returns in this movie as one of the competitors of the fight club as Wong's opponent. Wong later gave him some water and later returns to their prison.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law[]
Abomination returns in this show. He hires Jennifer Walters to represent him in his parole hearing. Jennifer is initially hesitant due to conflict of interest since her cousin is Bruce Banner, but Emil signed a conflict waiver and Bruce himself seems okay with Blonsky now, having received an apology haiku from him. He insists on being called Emil rather than the Abomination, and says he has made seven soulmates through the prison's pen pal program, with whom he intends to settle down on a plot of land they bought him once granted parole. Jennifer agrees to take the case, believing that she can make the argument that the Super Soldier Serum given to him by the military is what caused his actions. However, as soon as she does, footage leaks of Emil in the underground fight club, much to Jen's shock.
Furious, Jen confronts Emil for his secretiveness about his earlier escape and for lying to him about not wanting to be Abomination anymore. Emil however reveals that it was Wong who broke him out of his cell and forced him to fight against his will, he nevertheless insists that he chose to voluntarily return to prison after that. Despite Wong serving as a witness to testify to Emil's goodwill, Jen struggles to convince the jury that Emil is no longer a threat, forcing the former soldier into his monstrous form and demonstrating that he is mentally stable. The court ultimately decides to grant Emil conditional liberty on the condition that he no longer turn into an Abomination, thus having an inhibitor electric bracelet placed on his leg.
A few weeks later, Emil retreated to Summer Twilights with a group of superhumans, the Abomasts, and the place became primarily a therapy center. Accidentally screwing up his inhibitor while trying to save his pet chicken from an electric fence, Emil is visited by his parole officer, as well as Jen who came at the officer's request as he was afraid the Abomination attacks him. Blonsky's friends accidentally wreck Jen's car, stalling her at Summer Tighs for a time, so Emil invites her to a shoot where the now She-Hulk talks about her recent romantic disappointment with Josh Miller. Emil encourages Jen to completely forget about Josh and move on.
Shortly after She-Hulk's reputation was shattered, Emil agreed to have the Intelligencia group use his lodge for a meeting and appear there as an Abomination, although Emil knew nothing of his evil motives the Intelligence. This meeting came, Abomination made an entrance acclaimed by the members of the group but was discovered by Jen who took it very badly that he violated his condition and made a pact with those who ruined her life. Abomination doesn't have time to explain that Intelligencia leader Todd Phelps injected himself with Jen's irradiated blood for a Hulk version of himself. Todd nearly attacks Jen who is saved by Abomination, only for the Hulk to pop up to warn him and believe Abomination is going after his cousin, leading to a fight between them. So confused by events she deems insane, Jen literally leaves the show for the real world and forces the artificial intelligence and author of MCU K.E.V.I.N. to restructure the end of the season.
Following the altered ending, Emil agrees to answer for his actions for becoming Abomination again but remains on good terms with Jen. Later, back in his cell, Emil is once again freed by Wong whom he had contacted before his arrest, with the Sorcerer Supreme granting him permanent asylum in Kamar-Taj.
Secret Invasion[]
In the fight between G'iah and Gravik, Abomination's powers and shape are replicated.
