Abu is Aladdin's pet monkey in the 2019 live-action remake of Aladdin. Portrayed as a computer-animated tufted capuchin monkey, he plays a similar role to his animated counterpart as Aladdin's sidekick.
Role in the film[]
Abu is first seen along with his owner Aladdin walking across the markets of Agrabah to which, he, Aladdin, and Dalia encounter a series of merchants and guards noticing Aladdin's actions in which the three escape from the guards. Later after Aladdin remembered what the guard telling him to make way for Prince Anders, Aladdin explains to Abu that there is a time to take items from merchants and a time not to do so, with the previous instance being a time when he should have done nothing.
Later, Abu is seen distracting a guard outside the palace of Agrabah to which Iago spies on the monkey to which he reports to Jafar that Abu is linked to Aladdin. Abu is also seen accompanying Aladdin in his temporary job as a servant but after the guards catch him due to him being remembered as the street boy from the market, he and Abu are taken to a faraway desert where Jafar tells Aladdin about the Cave of Wonders. He and Abu enter the Cave to which the Cave warns the two that only one person can enter and every treasure inside must avoid being touched. Along the way, Aladdin and Abu find a magic carpet which follows the duo on their way to get the lamp. Unlike in the animated version, Abu finds a ruby along the way instead of finding it on a monkey idol in the animated version. Soon as Aladdin finds the lamp, Abu touches the ruby and causes the Cave to collapse. He, Aladdin, and Carpet notice the Cave collapsing to which the two arrive at the entrance where Jafar is at. As Aladdin gives Jafar the lamp to make him rich and the sorcerer prepare to put Aladdin to his demise, Abu tackles him to save his master from falling into his demise as the Cave collapses.
Trapped inside the cave and Aladdin rubs the lamp to spawn a Genie, he and Carpet are seen dancing during the musical number "Friend Like Me" as the Genie tells Aladdin that he never had a friend like him. Aladdin does his first wish to get everyone stuck inside to get out of the cave, although Aladdin is able to avoid using up his first wish by slipping the lamp behind his back so Genie can't see that he isn't touching it.
As was the case in the animated film, Abu was changed into an elephant when Aladdin wished to become a prince as Abu is later seen walking across Agrabah during the musical number "Prince Ali". However, unlike in the original, he was changed back shortly to his normal form after Prince Ali's introduction, whereas in the original, he is still in his elephant form until where Jafar transforms him back to his regular form during his rule in Agrabah.
Abu later appears alongside Aladdin during the situation with him arguing with the Genie that everyone thinks he is Prince Ali to which Aladdin feels upset about the wish the Genie gave to him. Abu, Aladdin, and Carpet later sneak into the palace where Jafar discovers Aladdin's true identity as he sends the three into a frozen wasteland after sending most of the inhabitants to the dungeon. Aladdin and Abu manage to escape the wasteland riding on Carpet as the trio manages to get Jasmine out of the forced marriage between her and Jafar as Jafar turns Iago into a giant roc to get the lamp Jasmine took from him. Abu then confronts Iago as a giant roc to get the lamp back in which the Sultan stops Jafar from doing so as Iago is shrunk back to his normal form as Abu takes the lamp. Abu and the rest of the inhabitants also notice Jafar's rage as Jafar creates a powerful storm to destroy Agrabah. Later after Jafar is trapped inside his own lamp along with Iago and the two are banished to the Cave or Wonders, Abu and Carpet are later fixed when Agrabah is put back to normal. He and the Agrabah citizens later attend Aladdin and Jasmine's wedding. Then Abu leaves flying the magic carpet ride to have the fireworks during the night at the palace, and is later seen dancing with everyone else during the credits.
