"Abuelita's Shawl" is the second segment of the twenty-first episode of Ariel. It premiered on March 7, 2025 alongside "Jewels the Winner".
Plot[]
Ariel and her friends head to Lucia's house, which is easy to spot because of the porch light and music. Lucia's abuelita, Mrs. Alma, greets them, and reveals she's crocheting a new blanket. Lucia mentions what else Mrs. Alma made around the house. Mrs. Alma mentions that Lucia made the shawl for her when she was little, and wears it all the time. Mrs. Alma then goes to make snacks, while Lucia wishes she wouldn't wear that shawl, as she doesn't like it anymore because it's old and lumpy. Ariel tells Lucia to make Mrs. Alma a new shawl, to which Lucia accepts. The others decide to help and leave to the Crystal Cavern just as Mrs. Alma arrives with empanadas, which they have.
Ariel then crochets a little square, which is a blanket for Flounder, while Fernie crochets doilies and Lucia crochets a purple shawl. Ariel and her friends arrive with the new shawl, which Mrs. Alma appreciates, but loves wearing the old shawl all the time. Ariel tells Lucia it's okay, and Lucia finally realizes that purple is Ursula's favorite color and green is Mrs. Alma's favorite color is green. At the Crystal Cavern, Lucia crochets a green shawl, but it is too small. Regardless, she brings it to Mrs. Alma, who decides to wear it some other day, like when they go to the market tomorrow. Lucia is nervous, as she really wanted Mrs. Alma to take off the old shawl she doesn't like anymore. Ariel tells Lucia they don't all like the same things.
Lucia decides to make Mrs. Alma the nicest shawl the best way she can with magic. She gathers two balls of yarn and recites the spell to make the shawl, which contains various colors. Everyone likes it, and later, Mrs. Alma compliments it. However, she likes both shawls and decides to wear the new one some other day. Mrs. Alma will wear the new shawl for a special occasion. Lucia swims away, and the others catch up with her.
Mrs. Alma tells Lucia she loved the shawls she made for her, and meant it. Lucia mentions she doesn't like the old shawl anymore, and Mrs. Alma understands it's her favorite and very special to her, just like the curandera bag is special to Lucia. Mrs. Alma made it for her and made lots of other bags. Lucia wears the bag because it reminds her of when she was little and she and Mrs. Alma were dancing. To Lucia, it was so much fun watching Mrs. Alma make it for her, because there's love in every stitch. They recap the different things that make them think of each other and the memories they used to have. Lucia finally understands why Mrs. Alma likes the old shawl so much and apologizes for not listening to Ariel when she was trying to help her learn that. Everyone then celebrates with a dance.
