After the theft of the Anulax Battery and the destruction of the Sovereign fleet, Adam was created by High Priestess Ayesha to be the next step in the evolution of the Sovereign to destroy the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Adam Warlock appears in the film as the secondary antagonist-turned hero. He is released from his cocoon too early much to Ayesha's dismay and worry as she thinks he is too much like a child. Adam is tasked to find Rocket Raccoon and bring him to High Evolutionary, in order to lead Rocket to his deathbed. However, Warlock eventually saves Star-Lord from death and reforms himself, eventually becoming a member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy.

With being called a Warlock, Adam is the second MCU antagonist to technically have this title, following Thanos.
He was originally a major character in early drafts of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However his role was ultimately cut down to a post-credits scene due to the film's already full cast of characters.[1]
