"Adventures in Bebe Sitting" is the thirty-fifth episode of The Proud Family.

Synopsis[]

Penny and her friends get tickets to go to a concert, but she and Dijonay have to stay home and babysit since both their parents go on a couple's retreat. But Dijonay decides to ditch Penny to go to the concert, leaving Penny with Dijonay's wild and troublesome brothers and sisters.

Plot[]

Penny, Zoey, and LaCienega have been waiting in line outside a ticket booth for days. They are second in line to get tickets for the hottest hip-hop group around - 3rd Storee. Dijonay arrives with food, but the other girls are not happy to see her. Not only did Dijonay ditch the girls to go shopping, she is two days late with cold and half-eaten food. Before anyone can say anything else, the ticket booth opens, then closes after the first person in line buys her ticket. The concert is sold out due to everyone buying their tickets online. But, as luck would have it, the Gross Sisters bought several tickets with intent to scalp them. The sisters sell Penny and her friends the tickets for $40 each (a 300% markup). Regardless, the girls are excited to get their tickets.

Later, at the Proud home, Trudy has made Oscar a delicious dinner of his favorite foods. Suga Mama and Papi arrive to have some food, but Trudy tells them to leave. Oscar is happy that Trudy made his favorite meal and told off Suga Mama...then is immediately suspicious. He feels that Trudy is only being nice to him because she wants something. It turns out, what Trudy wants from Oscar is to accompany her to a couple's retreat, so that they can strengthen their relationship and not lose each other. Oscar doesn't want to go, saying that the psychologist running the program is a quack, and he couldn't "lose" Trudy if he tried. Penny arrives and tells her parents that she finally has her tickets. But, Trudy tells Penny she can't attend the concert because the couple's retreat is Saturday night, and since Suga Mama will be attending the retreat with Papi, there is no one else to watch Bebe and Cece. Oscar tries to argue that Penny should go to the concert, but Trudy sees through his excuse to miss the retreat and insists that Penny stay and watch the babies.

Afterwards, Penny video-chats with her friends, sad that she will miss the concert. Dijonay says that she is glad her parents don't attend things like couple's retreats, but Mrs. Jones calls up to Dijonay. She says that she and Mr. Jones will be attending the couple's retreat and Dijonay has to watch her younger siblings. The following day after school, Zoe and LaCienega go to the mall to get new outfits for the concert, while Penny and Dijonay plan their babysitting duties. They agree to watch all the kids at Penny's house, and listen to 3rd Storee's music and videos. The two of them approach the Gross Sisters. Penny wants her money back for the ticket. Nubia agrees, but deducts the cost of "depreciation." She gives Penny $5 back, then immediately sells the ticket to the Chang triplets for $50. Dijonay hangs onto her ticket, saying it is a memento of what almost was.

Saturday evening arrives and all the parents go to the retreat. Dijonay brings her brothers and sisters to Penny's house, but they quickly cause a ruckus. The kids chase Puff around, roughhouse with Penny, and scream to watch The Thingy Show. Dijonay says she has a Thingy videotape at her house, and will go get it to calm the kids down. She says she will return shortly. An hour later, Dijonay still isn't back. Paprika reveals to Penny that Dijonay paid her siblings to be extra wild, so she would have an excuse to leave the house. At the concert, Dijonay meets up with Zoey and LaCienega in the audience, and tells them that Penny offered to watch the babies alone so that Dijonay wouldn't miss the concert. Penny is upset at being ditched. But, when Cinnamon and Nutmeg take their skateboards and ride off down the street, Penny needs to find them, or else she will get into trouble. At first, she tries to get Tabasco and Basil to watch the rest of the kids while she looks for the missing "Spice Girls." But, Tabasco puts on a CD of "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" and everyone dances, even Penny.

At the couple's retreat, Dr. Feelgood is doing an exercise with all the couples. He calls it "The Chair of Trust." The men will be seated in armchairs beneath anvils. The anvils will drop, and it is up to the women to pull a lever to stop the anvil from hurting the men. The men, knowing that they have not been treating their wives too well, panic and try to leave, but are forced to stay by Dr. Feelgood. The doctor states that he wouldn't blame the ladies if they let the anvils fall, then presses the release button. All the ladies pull their levers, stopping the anvils short. But, Suga Mama's lever breaks and the anvil falls on Papi's head. But, it turns out the anvils were just anvil-shaped water balloons. Dr. Feelgood tries to move on to a truth exercise, but the men try to escape again.

Eventually, Penny decides to bring all the kids with her on their skateboards, scooters and strollers. They see Cinnamon and Nutmeg skateboard down a hill toward Wizard Burger, and follow suit. A limo pulls out of the drive-thru, directly in the path of the group. Cinnamon and Nutmeg use parachutes to stop their approach before hitting the limo, but Penny is unable to stop the runaway stroller. Cece quickly uses a dart gun and string to shoot a nearby tree, yanking the stroller to a stop. The impact sends Penny flying into the moon roof of the limo. She lands on a chair opposite the limo's passengers - the hip-hop group 3rd Storee.

Before the singers can ask what is happening, the limo starts to rock back and forth. The kids are pushing and crawling all over the limo. Tabasco and Cinnamon start arguing with the limo driver. Penny snaps at the kids to stop and apologize to the limo driver, which they do. One of the 3rd Storee members asks what is happening, and Penny explains everything, from buying a marked up ticket to Dijonay ditching her. The singers offer to take Penny and all the kids to the concert with them in their limo, and everyone happily accepts.

At the concert, Dijonay, LaCienega, Zoey, and the Chang triplets(who managed to all get in with the one ticket) are waiting for the concert to start. A security guard arrives and is doing ticket checks. He takes the girls' tickets, and tells them the tickets are fakes. He promptly throws them, along with the triplets, out of the concert hall. But, at that moment, 3rd Storee arrives in their limo. They exit and wave to the crowd, and are followed by Penny, the Proud twins, and the Jones kids. Dijonay tries to get in with Penny, but the limo driver stops her. She tries pulling the "best friend" card with Penny. Penny, understandably angry, denies knowing Dijonay. Dijonay then tries appealing to her younger siblings, but they deny knowing her too. Penny claims to know Zoey, LaCienega, and the Changs and the limo driver lets them all in, but Dijonay is left behind. The group enters the concert hall to start the show.

Dijonay doesn't believe that Penny would abandon her, but when the music starts and the crowd outside disperses, Dijonay accepts that Penny has left her hanging. Dijonay says aloud that she deserves to be left behind for being a poor friend. She acknowledges that she deserves what she is getting. Penny comes back outside, and agrees with everything Dijonay said. She tells Dijonay that she is tired of being taken advantage of and lied to. Dijonay apologizes and goes to leave, but Penny tells her to stay and watch the concert with her. Dijonay is confused, since Penny no longer trusts her. Penny says that she trusts Dijonay to be the unreliable friend. Dijonay takes this to mean that Penny accepts her as she is. The two of them go into the concert hall to watch the show.

Back at the house, a bus drops the couples off. The retreat is over, and the men declare they enjoyed the experience, especially when they got to throw pies at the ladies. Papi enjoyed himself, too...but he was listening to a soccer game on his radio headphones the whole time.

Trivia[]

  • The title is a parody of the 1987 film Adventures in Babysitting, which would later be remade as a Disney Channel Original Movie of the same name.
    • It also may refer to the 1992 film Bebe's Kids, written by Proud Family's creator Bruce E. Smith.
  • "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" by Buckwheat Boyz is featured prominently. Some time later, the song would go viral by being associated with a gif of a dancing banana, and would later be referenced on an episode of Family Guy.
