"After Today" is the opening song from A Goofy Movie, which is sung by Max Goof (Aaron Lohr) and other background characters on the last day of school before summer vacation. Just before the song ends, the school bell rings to mark the beginning of the last day of school and Max sings the last part of the song, ending the number and he falls down from the bleachers, causing the other students to laugh at him, with Roxanne (Kellie Martin) helping up on his feet.

Lyrics[]

Max: They've been laughin' since I can remember, but they're not gonna laugh anymore!
No more "Maxie the Geek", no more "Goof of the Week" like before!

Girl: No more algebra tests 'til September!
Girl's Boyfriend: No more lookin' at losers like him!
Bully Boy: No more havin' to cheat!
Bully Boy 2: No more mystery meat!
Boy 1: No more gym!
Boy 2: No more gym!
Boy 3: No more gym!
Boy 4: No more gym!

Lisa: Gonna move to the mall!
Chad: Gonna live in the pool!
Max: Gonna talk to Roxanne and not feel like a fool!

Chorus: 'Cause after today, I'm gonna be cruisin'!
Max: After today, she'll be mine!
Chorus: After today, my brains will be snoozin'!
Max: If I don't faint, I'll be fine!

Twin Girls: I've got forty more minutes
of Home Economics...
Twin Boys: Then down with the textbooks,
Nerds: And up with the comics!

Max: Just think of all the time I've been losin', finding the right thing to say!
Chorus: But things'll be goin' my way, after today!

Max: She looked right through me, and who could blame her?
I need a new me, plus some positive proof that I'm not just a goof!

Chorus: And after today, I'm gonna be cruisin'!
Goth Girls: No more pep rallies to cut, blech!
Max/Chorus: After today, my brains will be snoozin'!
Bus Driver: I'm gonna sit on my butt

Max: I've got less than an hour and when this is ended,
I'll either be famous...
Principal Mazur: Or you'll be suspended!

Chorus: Just think of all the time I've been losin', waiting until I could say...
Gonna be on my own, kiss the parents goodbye
Gonna party from now 'til the end of July!
Things'll be goin' my way, after today!!!

Max: I wish that this was the day, after today!

Trivia[]

  • Despite the high school scenes being prominent in the first 20 minutes of the film, this song focuses on teenagers that are more stereotypical here, including goths, jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, and scantily clad flirts. Adolescent stereotyping is toned down or omitted in later children’s films/programs due to modern sensibilities over the experience from the 1990s, as well as not depicting early teens with grownup features since these imageries are deemed inappropriately imaginable in today’s standards[1] (Gravity Falls is one of the examples to later medias that has proven the audiences wrong[2]).
  • "After Today" is the only musical number in A Goofy Movie that has more mature undertones in the lyrics, which heavily exploits adolescent angst resulting the teenagers here are devoting their independence. The notable lyric "Gonna be on my own, kiss the parents goodbye" can be interpreted as people would move out from their parents' houses, which teenagers aren't eligible of buying/renting a place of their own until they're graduated from high school.
  • The 1967 film Doctor Dolitte features a song with the same name, which was performed by a supporting character named Matthew Mugg and composed by Leslie Bricusse with lyrics written by Anthony Newley.
  • A lyric from the song serves as the inspiration for the Goofy Movie documentary, Not Just a Goof.

References[]

  1. Before the later years owing to modern sensibilities, younger teen girls were drawn with fuller features resembling young women resulting older actresses in their mid to late teens have played younger parts in live action films, especially when it comes to a mature subject matter, such as Romeo + Juliet for instance.
  2. On the Gravity Falls episode "Weirdmageddon", Dipper and Mabel Pines are looking forward to their 13th birthday as placed their portraits on cutout pictures of grown adults, hoping they would look "mature". On the third part and series finale, they’ve seen that they have not changed when they just turned 13, meaning their bodies would not quickly mature until they reach about Wendy's age.
