Agrabah is the name of the 11-minute pilot that was produced for the cancelled Kingdom Hearts series. It was directed by Seth Kearsley, who had previously worked on Timon & Pumbaa and Nightmare Ned, and was created August 28, 2003. The series was not picked up due to it being considered too dark for Disney Channel and because Square Enix did not want any contradictions with the video game series.
Plot[]
Narrated by Jiminy Cricket, who explains the show's premise of the worlds of the Magic Kingdom being under the threat of Maleficent and the Heartless, the pilot begins with Sora, Riku, and Kairi on Destiny Islands.
After Sora, Keyblade in hand, spars with Riku, the trio watch the sunset and as they talk about the possibility of other worlds out there, Sora remarks that he hopes to travel to them with his friends. The Heartless then begin their attack on the island. The scene is then revealed to be a bad dream with Sora waking up aboard the Gummi Ship, having already met Donald and Goofy.
Meanwhile at Hollow Bastion, Maleficent is meeting with Jafar to plot their invasion of Agrabah. Jafar explains that the only way to get the Magic Lamp to ensure Agrabah's fall is to find a diamond in the rough and Maleficent sends him away, calling in Riku for the task.
Back on the Gummi Ship, the ship's sensors detect Heartless activity on Agrabah and investigate. Sora, a reluctant hero at this point just hoping to find his friends, is assured by Goofy that there's a hero inside everyone.
As they travel through Agrabah's marketplace, Goofy and Donald very loudly call out for Sora's friends despite being told to keep a low profile on this world and end up stumbling into a Heartless attack. Soon, they find Riku and he and Sora reunite with a hug. Riku, still looking for Kairi, explains to Sora that he thinks that the lamp is the key to finding her and fixing everything, seeing him as a potential "diamond in the rough".
Journeying to the Cave of Wonders, the Tiger Head comments that while Sora is not the one he's been expecting, he is still worthy enough to pass. Riku follows Sora into the cave and the two race to the lamp on its pedestal. When Riku touches it however, a portal to the Realm of Darkness opens up to allow more Heartless into the world. As Sora tells him to put it back, Riku snaps at Sora, remarking that he can't fight the Heartless and the power of darkness is the only way they can find Kairi. Sora climbs the stairs fighting the Heartless swarm to knock the lamp from Riku's grasp, causing him to snap out of his anger and explain that he was not himself and that everything went cold when he touched the lamp. Telling Sora to believe him, a Darkside grabs Riku and takes him back through the portal.
As Sora puts the lamp back, Riku reports back to Maleficent. While she's disappointed with Riku's failure, she sees Sora's potential trust in being able to help his friend as an asset.
Back on the Gummi Ship, Sora looks out onto the worlds, now more ready to accept his responsibility to protect the worlds from the Heartless while continuing his search for his friends. Goofy remarks that they really have found a hero.
