Alien: Earth is an American science fiction horror television series created by Noah Hawley. It is the first television series in the Alien franchise and is set two years before the events of the 1979 film Alien.

It premiered on FX and FX on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally on August 12, 2025.

Synopsis[]

The opening of the first episode introduces the series' central premise: humanity's pursuit of immortality through three paths.

  • Cyborgs: humans enhanced with biomechatronic body parts.
  • Synthetics (Synths): fully artificial beings endowed with intelligence.
  • Hybrids: synthetic bodies containing transferred human consciousness.

When the deep space research vessel USCSS Maginot crash-lands on Earth, a young hybrid woman named Wendy and a group of tactical soldiers make a discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's biggest threat.

Production[]

Bloody Disgusting reported in February 2019 that two Alien shows were in development, one animated (Alien: Isolation) and one live-action for the network FX on Hulu.[1] As part of Disney's Investor Day presentation, the latter show was officially announced to be in development for the network, with Noah Hawley as showrunner and Scott as executive producer, being set on Earth in the near future.[2]

On February 17, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter revealed the series is a prequel taking place before the events of Alien. Hawley himself confirmed that the series would be tied more into the style and mythology of the original 1979 film rather than the prequel films Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant. In April 2023, chairman of FX Productions, John Landgraf, stated that the series was in active pre-production. According to FX Entertainment president Gina Balian, the scale of the production of Alien: Earth was much bigger than that of the 2024 FX series Shōgun, whose budget has been reported as $250 million.

By November 2025, The series was renewed for a second season.[3]

Filming[]

Principal photography was scheduled for March 2022, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production on the series began on July 19, 2023, in Thailand. Filming was allowed (without the American cast, including Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, and David Rysdahl) to occur during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike due to the series' British cast working under an Equity contract. In late August, production was halted due to the strike with most of the first episode completed. Filming resumed in April 2024, and wrapped in mid-July. Filming for the second season is scheduled to begin in 2026, in London.[3]

Trivia[]

  • The series takes place two years before Alien and ignores the events of Prometheus and, by proxy, Alien: Covenant. Noah Hawley felt that both films were "inherently less useful" as he wrote the series and even discussed it with Ridley Scott.[4]. This is further set in stone with Predator: Badlands, which also ignores Prometheus and Covenant, thus establishing that those movies are no longer part of canon, and, consequently, that Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem are re-integrated into canon.
  • Disney's Peter Pan is featured and referenced several times in the series. The characters draw attention to this in the episode "Metamorphosis", or more specifically the original book by J.M. Barrie.
  • Due to the series being closely related to 20th Century Studios, the characters are also shown frequently watching films released through Blue Sky Studios, specifically Ice Age: Continental Drift and Epic.
