Alien: Romulus is an American science-fiction horror film, serving as a "standalone" installment and the seventh film overall in Alien franchise. It was released on August 16, 2024.

Synopsis[]

In the ninth entry in the iconic sci-fi horror series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Plot[]

A spaceship picks up the remnants of the Nostromo, along with a piece of debris that contains a Xenomorph curled up inside.

On the planet known as the Jackson Star, Rain Carradine, a miner, and her adoptive synthetic brother Andy work in the mines, building up hours so that they can be allowed to leave the planet for Yvaga III. However, the Weyland-Yutani corporation constantly increases their hours, making it impossible for them to ever leave. Rain works while Andy, who has a love of telling bad jokes, attempts to keep her spirits up, though it is very much apparent that he is not well liked by the colony.

Rain finally gets word from her friend Tyler, who leads a group of Scavengers. Tyler is accompanied by his younger sister Kay, who unbeknownst to him is pregnant, their talkative cousin Bjorn, and Bjorn's adoptive sister Navarro.

They reveal that they picked up on radar an abandoned space facility, dubbed Romulus and Remus, that is floating right above their planet. Due to its connection to Weyland-Yutani, Andy is an asset that can help access the ship so that they can acquire cryo-pods for a trip to Yvaga. Despite her reluctance to use Andy for something so dangerous, Rain agrees.

The group fly up to the ship in the Corbelan IV and discover that due to its close proximity to Jackson Star's rings, they have roughly an hour or so before it collides and destroys the place. Tyler, Bjorn, and Andy disembark and manage to find cryo-pods, but they only have enough energy for 3 years rather than the 9 that are needed to get to Yvaga. They continue their search and find a lab that contains the remains of another synthezoid and a room containing the cryo-fuel needed. While attempting to remove them, they accidentally activate the emergency shut down which Andy is unable to override, and get trapped in a room with active facehuggers.

Rain and Navarro rush to the rescue, using the deactivated synthezoid's chip to give to Andy so that he can tap into the ship's mainframe. The facehuggers proceed to attack the group and Andy suddenly reboots with a more stoic and hardened personality. As the group outrun the facehuggers, one of them latches onto Navarro. They reactivate the synthezoid, identifying itself as Rook, but resembling Ash from Alien, who informs them that the Xenomorph is implanting its seed into her. They freeze the facehugger and remove it, but Rook explains that they are too late. Bjorn, delirious from what just happened, takes Navarro back to the Corbelan, but leaves the other three behind.

As the Corbelan takes off, Navarro is suddenly killed when the new Xenomorph bursts from inside of her. The ship destroys one of the facility's rockets, only for it to dock on the Romulus side. Kay runs into Bjorn who attempts to destroy a cocoon that the Xenomorph made for itself, only to be killed by the creature's acid. Andy, explaining that he now has a new prime directive, leads Rain and Tyler to get to the other side to save their friends. They make their way through a room filled with facehuggers, which they attempt to get passed by heating up the room to avoid getting caught.

They manage to make it to the hangar room to save Kay, but Andy, sensing that the Xenomorph is nearby, refuses to open the door for her, resulting in Kay getting captured by the Xenomorph. Rain realizes that the new chip inserted into Andy has caused him to give up his empathetic side in favor of supporting "the company", Weyland-Yutani. Andy takes them a lab containing more information on the Xenomorph, revealing that Weyland-Yutani planned to use its assets not just for weapons, but also to advance human evolution as its DNA can easily repair and improve damaged tissue. The group decide to fight back using weapons and take some of the serum, unaware that it also causes the subjects to morph into another Xenomorph.

The group happen upon a Xenomorph hive, but hear that Kay is still alive. The group manage to rescue her, but she is badly injured. As they ponder whether to use the serum to help save her, the group is chased by a horde of Xenomorphs. Tyler sacrifices himself to save Rain while Andy is incapacitated by one of the creatures. Rain and Kay travel up an elevator back to the ship, but Rain decides to return for Andy, instructing Kay that she can make it back herself. As she leaves, Kay decides to take the serum.

Rain finds Andy and removes the new chip, restoring his former functions. Rook, who communicates with them via TV signals, refuses to help them any further as his goal was simply to analyze the Xenomorph behavior. Rain and Andy use the ship's anti-gravity bursts to destroy several Xenomorphs before making their way back to the Corbelan. Rain then deactivates Rook's hold on the ship, allowing them to escape and sending the Romulus and Remus crashing into the Jackson Star's rings, destroying Rook along with the rest of the Xenomorphs.

Rain relaxes while Andy recharges, leaving Kay within one of the cryo-pods. However, the serum takes its terrible effect on Kay, causing her pregnancy to rapidly expand and she gives birth to a horrific egg. Rain attempts to get rid of it, but the creature hatches, creating a Xenomorph-Human hybrid, dubbed the Offspring in the credits. The Offspring proceeds to kill Kay and severely damages Andy. Rain leads the Offspring to the lower level of the Corbelan where the cargo hold is. Releasing the latches holding it up, Rain successfully releases the cargo hold with the Offspring on it, sending them crashing into rings.

A tired Rain puts Andy in one of the pods before entering one herself. She logs her uncertain yet hopeful journey to Yvaga.

Production[]

After the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company, it was officially confirmed at the 2019 CinemaCon that future Alien films are in development. In May 2019, Variety reported that the third prequel film was "in the script phase", with Ridley Scott attached to serve once again as director. In September 2020, Scott confirmed that work on the next installment is ongoing, but was undecided with keeping it tied in with the plot set out in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. In August 2021, however, a news report concluded that a sequel is currently uncertain.[1]

On March 4, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Fede Álvarez would be writing and directing the film after pitching his own story, and was said to be "connected" to the previous films in the franchise, with the project now being set to release on Hulu.[2]

On November 16, 2022, Deadline reported that Cailee Spaeny was cast in the lead role.[3]

On March 2, 2023, Deadline reported that Isabela Merced was cast in an undisclosed role.[4] The following day, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu joined the cast, and that the film is scheduled to begin on March 9 in Budapest.[5]

On June 13, 2023, it was announced that the film would be released on August 16, 2024.[6] It would be 45 years after the release of the original Alien film.
