The Animal Shelter is a home for abandoned and lost dogs. It is run by Susan Hegarty, an animal shelter lady with long red hair and glasses.
Background
In Lilo & Stitch, Stitch, mistaken for a dog, is taken to the shelter after being run over by a convoy of trucks, presumably (to the drivers) in the slim hope that he had survived. When he recovers the next day, he finds himself in the kennel. He tries to interrogate the dogs, but when that fails, he sneaks out the front via the roof. He thereafter runs into Jumba, who tries to disable him. Seeking refuge in the shelter, Stitch tries to bang an idea into his head when Lilo walks into the kennel. Stitch poses as a dog and Lilo picks him out.
In the series episode "Finder", Mrs. Edmonds takes Stitch to the animal shelter after he causes a disturbance at Mertle's house. He attempted to capture an escaped Hämsterviel, who was recently "adopted" by Mertle after she mistook him for a talking gerbil. Stitch is eventually rescued from the shelter by Lilo and Experiment 158 (Finder).
In "Babyfier", the animal shelter becomes Experiment 151's (Babyfier's) one true place after he was captured and rehabilitated by Lilo and Stitch. He turns old dogs into adorable and more adoptable puppies, effectively giving them a second chance at finding a new home.
In "Sample", Susan Hegarty calls Merwin and Dean, two failed alien hunters, about Experiment 258 (Sample). Merwin and Dean almost take 258 to an alien convention. However, Lilo and a reluctant Stitch suddenly arrive at the shelter to get Stitch his shots. Merwin and Dean, seeing that Stitch is an alien too, attempt to grab him to take him to the convention as well. When Lilo and Stitch see Sample, they decide to rescue him from the two alien hunters.
In "Skip", Susan Hegarty presents Experiment 089 (Skip) to Lilo when she asks if there have been any new "dogs" brought to the animal shelter lately. She then lets Lilo take Skip home with her.
Trivia
- In the first film, the fourth wall was potentially broken; when Stitch was getting adopted at the animal shelter, the adoption paper noticeably shows information regarding the development of said film.
- Stitch, Sample and Skip are the only known experiments that were mistaken for dogs.
- Babyfier is the only experiment to be brought to the shelter.
