She first gained fame in 2005 for playing Inda Opal Baloni in the film adaptation of Because of Winn-Dixie and Violet Beauregarde in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She also voiced Dani in her episode debut Kindred Spirits. She later gained more recognition for her role as Bethany Hamilton in the 2011 biographical drama film Soul Surfer. Additionally, she played the lead role of Carrie Bradshaw in The CW's series The Carrie Diaries (2013–2014). In 2019, she played the role of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's neighbor Lacey in the Hulu miniseries The Act.
