Annie James is one of the main protagonists in the 1998 remake of the The Parent Trap (the other being her twin sister, Hallie Parker).
Biography[]
Annie and Hallie were born on October 11, 1986 to Nick Parker and Elizabeth James in Napa, California. Their parents married on the cruise line Queen Elizabeth II. Shortly after the girls were born, Nick and Elizabeth divorced. Elizabeth moved back to London with Annie while Hallie stayed behind in Napa, California with Nick. Since Annie was just a baby at the time, she didn't have any knowledge about Nick or Hallie. She grew up with Elizabeth and her grandfather, Charles James in London where she formally worked as a wedding gown designer.
Summer Camp at Camp Walden[]
In the summer of 1998, Elizabeth sent her to summer camp at Camp Walden For Girls where Hallie was also sent to by Nick. They do not meet until a fencing class where Annie challenges Hallie to a duel. They did not recognize each other at first because of the fencing masks they were wearing. Hallie agrees to the duel, but loses to Annie, who accidentally pushes Hallie into a water trough. Hallie then retaliates by pulling Annie into the water when Annie tried to apologize and pull her out of it. The camp counselor Marva Jr. told the girls to apologize to each other. They stood up, took of the masks and realize just then, they were twins.
Throughout summer camp, they then subsequently waged a war by pulling a number of tricks on each other. However, the counselors were pulled into Hallie's last prank. As a result, they decided to send the girls to the Isolation Cabin for the rest of camp in order to work out their differences - as well as separating them from the other campers.
While in the cabin, they learn that they have many things in common and soon find out they are twins when they learn that they share the same birthdays, are the same age and find that their pictures of their estranged parents whom they never met are the same one. They then decide to switch places to better understand their estranged parent, how they met, and why they divorced.
Switching Roles[]
Each twin trains the other to impersonate her, with the intent to switch places at the end of summer camp. In London, Hallie meets her mother for the first time, as well as the family butler Martin, and her maternal grandfather Charles, while Annie meets Nick and his housekeeper Chessy in California. Much to Annie's dismay, she learns that Nick is engaged to Meredith Blake, a gold-digging publicist from San Francisco. Meredith acts friendly towards "Hallie," but she reveals to her assistant Richard that she plans to send Hallie to a boarding school in Timbuktu after the wedding. Annie phones Hallie and implores her to bring Liz to California to try and break up Nick and Meredith, but Hallie refuses, as she is desperately wanting to spend more one-on-one time with Liz.
After Chessy notices changes in "Hallie's" behavior, Annie confesses her identity to Chessy, who agrees to keep it a secret from Nick. While on the phone with Annie discussing Nick's impending wedding to Meredith, Hallie is caught by Charles, who encourages her to tell Liz the truth. After doing so, Liz is surprised but happy to learn that she has been with Hallie since the end of camp, and they both decide to travel to California to establish joint custody of the girls between each parent.
The Reveal[]
The twins, with Martin and Chessy's help, arrange for a meeting between Nick and Liz at the Stafford Hotel in California. Upon reuniting with Liz, Nick happily learns that he has had Annie with him since the end of camp. Liz also meets Meredith and learns about her engagement to Nick. Annie and Hallie, with Chessy and Martin's help, attempt to recreate the night their parents met by arranging dinner on a yacht. Nick and Liz discuss their breakup, which occurred when Liz ran off after a fight, secretly hoping Nick would follow her. They agree on shared custody of the girls, but decided not to resume their relationship. Liz plans to fly back to London with Annie the next day, but the twins refuse to reveal which one is which unless the entire family takes a camping trip. Liz insists that Meredith go in her place so that she can become more acquainted with the twins before marrying Nick.
Camping Trip with Meredith and Nick[]
On the camping trip, the twins play a series of pranks on Meredith (putting a lizard on her bottle, filling her bag with rocks, telling her how hitting two sticks together would keep the bears away, sabotaging her bug repellant with sugar and water, and pulling out her air mattresses out of her tent and into the lake where she wakes up and eventually falls into the water getting soaking wet). She comes out so furiously, that she demands that Nick chooses between her or his daughters. Finally seeing Meredith's true nature, Nick breaks up with her. After the camping trip, Nick and Liz realize they still have feelings for each other and are still in love, but decide to go their separate ways, each with the twin they have respective custody of. When Liz and Annie return to London, they find Nick and Hallie, who had taken a flight on Concorde. Nick says that he didn't want to make the same mistake of not going after Liz again and they share a kiss.
Second chance[]
The end credits reveal that Liz and Nick have remarried on the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship, Annie and Hallie were their bridesmaids and Chessy and Martin have become engaged. The family moves back to Napa, California. Chessy moves out of the house and Liz's father moves in. Elizabeth sells her flat in London and becomes a famous wedding designer in California.
