Anthony is a botanist who loves his kids and always tells typical botany based dad jokes. He can occasionally come off as socially awkward and unsure, but he hides a determination that reveals a slightly darker side to himself. Even when under the influence of the mysterious black liquid, he still maintains a rather unsettled demeanor that confuses even himself. Deep down, he is actually a heroic person who will do anything to save his friends and family from the dangers of the unknown.

With the exception of his first name, Anthony Brewer is almost exactly like Michael Brewer from the original story Stay Out of the Basement. Interestingly, Michael is the name of his son.
David Schwimmer is primarily known for the long running sitcom Friends. In the first episode, Cece uses the word "pivot" when describing how to get into college, a word that Anthony responds to. This is a nod to Schwimmer's character Ross when he famously used the word on his show.
