Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a country in southern Central Europe. A landlocked East Alpine country, Austria borders the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Hungary, Germany, and Italy. The country is best known for producing several skilled musical producers, as well as being the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazis. The country played a huge role in both world wars, especially as back then, it was a united country with Hungary known as the Austro-Hungarian empire, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked the first war. It covers an area of 83,879km and has a population of 8 million. The German name for Austria, Österreich, derives from the Old High German Ostarrîchi, which meant "eastern realm" and which first appeared in the "Ostarrîchi document" of 996 B.C. This word is probably a translation of Medieval Latin Marchia orientalis into a local (Bavarian) dialect.
