Avatar: Fire and Ash is an upcoming American epic science fantasy film directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios. It is a direct sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water and it is scheduled to be released on December 19, 2025.

Synopsis

One year after settling in with the Metkayina Clan, Jake and Neytiri's family grapples with grief after Neteyam's death. Eventually, they encounter a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe called the Ash People, led by the fiery tribe leader, Varang, who has allied with Jake's enemy, Quaritch, as the conflict on Pandora escalates to devastating consequences.

• Sam Worthington as Jake Sully: A former human who fell in love with Neytiri and befriended the Na'vi after becoming a part of the Avatar Program, eventually taking their side in their conflict with humans and leading them to victory; at the end of the first film, he becomes the new leader of the Omaticaya (the Na'vi clan central to the story) alongside Mo'at and transfers his mind into his avatar permanently.
• Zoë Saldaña as Neytiri: Daughter to the previous clan chief, future Tsahìk of the clan, and mate to Jake Sully.
• C.C.H. Pounder as Mo'at: The Omaticaya's spiritual leader and Neytiri's widowed mother.
• Cliff Curtis as Tonowari: The leader of the reef people clan of Metkayina.

Production

On July 31, 2017, it was announced that the New Zealand-based visual effects studio Weta Digital had commenced work on the Avatar sequels.

Principal photography on Avatar 2 and 3 began simultaneously on September 25, 2017, in Manhattan Beach, California. Filming on the next two sequels will begin after wrapping the post-production on first two sequels.

According to the now late producer Jon Landau, live-action filming for Avatar 3 and its predecessor commenced in New Zealand in early 2019.

In September 2020, Cameron announced that 95% of Avatar 3 had been completed.

Trivia

• Michelle Yeoh was initially and originally slated to appear in the film. However, director James Cameron clarified in August 2024 that she would not appear in the film, and will instead appear in Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.
• This will be the last film to be co-produced by Jon Landau, who died during production on July 5, 2024, at the age of 64.
