"Aw, Hell, the King" is the third episode of the second season of the ABC comedy-musical Galavant.

Synopsis[]

Desperate to raise an army and storm Hortensia, Galavant and King Richard return to his former castle to find the village thriving, now that they've found democracy. The discovery causes Richard to have an identity crisis now that his people don't need him. Galavant uses a town hall meeting to recruit fighters from the village, but volunteers are in short supply. In Hortensia, an evil wedding planner named Wormwood poisons Isabella's mind with an enchanted tiara, intent on making her help him take over the kingdom.

Plot[]

Richard is baffled over his castle's disappearance as he and Galavant head to the nearby village for some answers. A peasant named John informs them that due to Richard's incredibly long absence in Valencia, the townsfolk came to the realization that their government was ruled by men in "metal hats" that served no purpose. They instead decided to become a democracy and take everything to a vote (as long as you are still a man of a certain age and type). Richard becomes disillusioned and starts to wonder what his new purpose in life is while Galavant manages to convince John to let him attend the next town hall meeting to decide on sending an army to Hortensia.

Back in Valencia, Gareth begins to have nightmares about Richard dying in front of him and accusing him of being the cause of it. These result in him waking up screaming and annoying Madalena who informs Sid that he must find a way to end these night terrors or else he will be executed. When Gareth tells Sid about his nightmares, Sid deduces that he is feeling guilt over taking Richard's place on the throne. Gareth is oblivious to the concept of guilt and calls him an idiot. When his nightmares continue, Sid finally sits him down and teaches him a lullaby while also getting him to admit that he still misses Richard.

In Hortensia, Isabella is still upset over the botched message and is in no mood to continue the wedding. Her parents introduce her to Chester Wormwood, the wedding planner, who unbeknownst to them is plotting with his inept assistant Barry to usurp the kingdom of Hortensia. He creates a crown for Isabella that when worn will put her under a spell and get her to do whatever he commands. The entire kingdom is proud of the wedding, but oblivious to Wormwood's plot as he succeeds in getting Isabella to wear the crown. She undergoes an attitude change by declaring that she is happy that the wedding is commencing in six weeks, though Steve the Jester figures out that something is off.

Galavant and Richard attend the town hall meeting as the former explains his plan, which confuses the peasants who think he is going through the same thing he did with Madalena. When they refuse to help him, Richard finally stands up and calls out the peasants for their lack of understanding. He makes a passionate speech for assistance in confronting Hortensia, but only one woman who still calls him king, named Roberta Steinglass, agrees to join their "army". Richard later informs Galavant that he will be coming with him after all as he does not want to be jobless in the village, and also because he burned down their rec center as revenge for deconstructing his castle.
