"Bad Hair Day" is the first segment of the twenty-fifth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

Mikey is given a bad haircut after getting gum stuck in it, and Vince and T.J. lie and say it's a trendy new cut, leading every kid on the playground to want their hair styled the same way.

Plot[]

T.J., Vince and Gus are annoyed that Gretchen and Spinelli get to leave school for a few days to attend a science exhibit of which Gretchen is competing in (Spinelli is tagging along because she needs an assistant). Meanwhile, Mikey is blowing the biggest bubble of gum, and everyone is watching. Captain Sticky of the Kindergartners becomes entranced with the bubble and accidentally pops it, coating Mikey in gum. Afraid to show himself to his parents with gum in his hair again, T.J. decides to cut his hair for him. The result is terrible with half his head looking bald, but T.J. convinces him that it looks good. Upon Randall discovering it, T.J. convinces him that it is the latest style from the rock band Dog's Pajamas and offers to give him a similar haircut.

Soon, the new hairstyle takes off with everyone on the playground convinced that it is the latest craze and T.J., Vince and Gus turning their faux talents into a business. King Bob arrives to get the haircut as well and T.J. and Vince reluctantly give him the same style. He declares it the best haircut and makes T.J. and Vince the royal barbers. Suddenly, Gretchen and Spinelli return from their trip and start laughing at everyone's hairstyles and ridiculing them. When they bring up Dog's Pajamas as being the inspiration, the two girls point out that their hair is long not short. Realizing that their hair is, in fact, a mess, all the students proceed to chase T.J. and Vince away, except Gus. Gretchen and Spinelli wonder if they should help them and Mikey sarcastically says they will once his hair grows back.

Trivia[]

  • Ashley A.'s messed up hair is an allusion to Cynthia's botched up hair from Rugrats, which was co-created by Recess co-creator Paul Germain, and had episodes written by co-creator Joe Ansolabehere.
  • The episode's plot could be seen as a reference to the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Emperor's New Clothes.
