Baltus Van Tassel first appears when he along with his daughter Katrina arrive at Sleepy Hollow as the narrator narrates them as wealthy and Baltus as "Old Baltus Van Tassel".
He is then seen as Ichabod Crane imagines him being with Katrina, reminding himself of Baltus, seeming in his way to the Van Tassel wealth, though it seems that Baltus doesn't have much time left, and Ichabod presumes he would come in.
He is then seen at his Halloween Party (though his name is seen written by Katrina inviting Ichabod Crane) he is seen smoking his pipe and Ichabod comes to Van Tassel, smoking his pipe, taking some from his pipe. It is then mentioned that he called upon his guests to tell him ghost stories. Afterwards he isn't seen again, including at his daughter's wedding to Brom Bones
