Barley and his brother Ian are introduced where the mythical world of New Mushroomton is set in a modern society where he elf brothers think about their late father Wilden Lightfoot who died from a severe illness before Ian was born. Just as Ian sets off to go to high school to make friends, Laurel tells him to stop thinking about her husband and get used in living in the present. However, on Ian's sixteenth birthday, Ian and Barley receive a gift from their mother: her husband's wizard staff, a Phoenix Gem, and a letter with instructions for the Visitation Spell. Just as Ian uses the spell to revive his late father, the spell was interrupted, reviving half of his father's physical appearance just as the gem disintegrates. Barley then uses the Quests of Yore board game to find help to find someone who knows about Phoenix Gems which is the Manticore who runs her restaurant the Manticore's Tavern just as he and Ian go on a quest to get to the tavern in order to seek help from the Manticore.

Barley and Ian ride on their van Guinevere as the two drive to go to the tavern shown on one of the cards in order to seek help from Corey the Manticore. The two then ask help from her but she refuses to at first as she multitasks her job in the family-friendly restaurant. Ian and Barley fight over the map to find the Phoenix Gem just as the map catches on fire, also setting the tavern on fire just as Ian and Barley escape he burning tavern. While on their way to the Phoenix Gem, the only clue Barley obtained from the tavern during a fire was a kid's menu which is linked to the Phoenix Gem at Raven's Point. On their way to Raven's Point, Barley and Ian run out of gas for their van as Ian uses the spell on Barley to increase the gas can's size for extra fuel to which Barley is shrunk into the size of a fairy. Arriving at the Swamp Gas area, Ian and Barley refill fuel for their van as the two continue their quest only to be chased by a gang of hostile fairies known as the Pixie Dusters. Having escaped from the Pixie Dusters, Specter and Gore notice Barley who later returns to his normal size) and Ian during the chase with the Pixie Dusters. The two attempt to arrest them for their driving antics, but Barley and Ian disguise themselves as Officer Colt Bronco in order to avoid getting arrested by the police.

After the police squadron leaves, Barley and Ian finally arrive at Raven's Point to find the Phoenix Gem. On their way, Colt Bronco notices the two for breaking the law as he prepares to arrest them to which the two and their father escape from Colt as he calls the police squadron for backup. To avoid getting arrested, Barley and Ian sacrifice their van into causing a rockslide to block the police squadron's view. Barley and Ian continue their quest to find the Phoenix Gem by surviving a dangerous gauntlet.

Having survived the gauntlet, the spot where Ian and Barley are at in the top of the mountain is the same spot where Ian's high school is at. Ian and Barley argue about this situation that only led the brothers to only find nothing and they could not find a sign of the Phoenix Gem. Just as Ian spends his last moments with his father before sunset, Barley notices the fountain he sees is the same fountain Barley tried to protect from a construction site. Barley uses a flower-shaped piece from one of the raven statues and insert it while fending off construction workers, inserting it and causing a cursed Phoenix Gem to appear. The curse, however, spreads across the area to cause an enormous dragon sculpture to appear. Ian plans to complete restoring his late father while Barley, Laurel, and Corey fight off the dragon. Just as Ian restored the full body of his late father and the dragon is destroyed, Barley then feels proud of what Ian did for bringing magic back to the mythical world after he passes away again after congratulating Ian for accomplishing his quest.

During the epilogue, Barley and Ian spend their new lives on their new van Guinevere 2 as the brothers continue their journey with magic brought back to the mythical world.

Barley Lightfoot is an elf and the deuteragonist of the 2020 Disney/Pixar animated feature film, Onward. He is the older brother of Ian who serves as a mentor, protector, and best friend.

Background

Personality

While his younger brother Ian is small, quiet, and awkward, Barley is large, loud, and excitable. Unlike Ian, he has memories of their father and describes who he was and how he acted. He fully believes Ian can bring their father back to life and summon magic back to their world.

Although Barley is always optimistic and unafraid to press on, he has his own issues and regrets, as his last memory of his father was being too afraid to see him when he was sick and Barley was supposed to say goodbye. As a result of not being there for his father's final moments, Barley swore he'd never be afraid again.

Despite being a little teasing, Barley never loses faith in his brother, Ian, and encourages him to rise above his (Ian's) own self-doubts, and is always there for him; something Ian didn't fully realize until he recollected the journey they'd taken together fulfilled his check-list he'd originally made to spend time with their father.

Barley loves fantasy and quests despite the world moving on from that time, and will fight to the death to protect artifacts from the time of magic causing him to be a bit of an outcast among fellow peers, and unfairly called a " screw up " (which upsets him) by the police, and one time by Ian.

Physical Appearance

Barley is a 19-year-old elf with a large and stocky build. He has blue skin and beard stubble. He wears a black beanie and T-Shirt with a 'Q' on it, covered by a large blue vest with numerous patches and pins sewn on it, green army shorts, and large black and white sneakers.

Barley bears a resemblance to his mother, Laurel Lightfoot.

Trivia

  • This is Chris Pratt's first animated role in a Pixar film having previously made his animation debut as Emmet in Warner Animation Group's The LEGO Movie and its sequel.
  • Before his father’s death, Barley used to play drums on his feet.
  • Barley has four memories of his father.
