Baron Mordo (real name Karl Amadeus Mordo) is a character from Marvel Comics who appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He is an alternate reality version of Karl Mordo who resides in Earth-838. He is part of the Illuminati and is the sorcerer supreme in this world.
Baron Mordo is portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who portrayed his alternate self in the first film.
Baron Mordo was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
Background[]
In 2015-2016, Baron Mordo welcomed 838 Stephen Strange into Kama Taj, but grew jealous of him due to Strange's fast learning and abilities which led to him becoming sorcerer supreme. Baron joined the Illuminati before 2018, not long before a war broke out between Thanos and the team. When 838 Doctor Strange told his group that he had used the darkhold to find a way to defeat Thanos, they found out that he had been dreamwalking and had him executed, leading to Baron replacing Stephen on the team.
Role in the film[]
When 616 Doctor Strange and a girl named America Chavez find themselves in Earth-838, Baron notices them outside of the New York Sanctum and happily greets them, which greatly confuses Stephen as he knows that the Mordo from his world dedicated his life to killing Strange. Baron invites the multiversal travellers inside to discuss their need to return home. Baron mentions to them that 838 Doctor Strange was the sorcerer before his death and the leader of the Illuminati, until he got hold of the Darkhold. 616 Strange tries to reason of Mordo to ask for help in returning home, but he betrays them and drugs them with what he puts in the tea.
When Stephen and America pass out, Baron has them locked up in special containers so that Christine Palmer can monitor them and check they are safe to be in this reality. When Stephen asks whether Earth-838 formed S.H.I.E.L.D. or the Avengers to Christine, Baron tells them the heroes in this world are neither, but are named the Illuminati, who Stephen must meet with.
Baron leads Stephen to where the Illuminati are and introduces him to the team; consisting of Captain Marvel, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Professor X and Captain Carter, as well as Mordo himself. They are to cast a vote to determine what to do with 616 Strange as they believe he is a bigger threat than the Scarlet Witch from Earth-616. However, before they can proceed, 616 Wanda dreamwalks into the body of her 838 alternate self and breaks into the Illuminati headquarters. The other members of the team leave to confront Wanda, while Mordo stays behind to deal with 616 Strange. The two fight and as a way to free himself, Stephen angers Mordo to want to cast his vote, threatening to portentually kill Stephen, but Strange wins and as he runs away, Baron exclaims that he now understands as to why his alternate self from 616 did not like Strange much. It's unknown what happens to Baron after this, but he is the only surviving member of the Illuminati left as he does not confront Wanda like the others.
