Oh, my dear Bartholomew, I'm afraid you have gone and upset me. You know what happens when someone upsets me...
―Ratigan before summoning Felicia

Bartholomew was one of Ratigan's henchmen in Disney's 1986 film, The Great Mouse Detective. When he called Ratigan a rat, he was eaten by Felicia.

Role in the film

Bartholomew is an alcoholic. He was constantly seen drinking from a beer mug and became disappointed whenever he ran out. During Ratigan's song, when Ratigan dumped a bottle of champagne into his water fountain, Bartholomew got very excited and immediately ran over to the fountain, where he started drinking from it. Then, Ratigan kicked him, and Bartholomew fell in and started swimming around in it. When Ratigan talks about his history with Basil, Bartholomew started crying about the part that Ratigan never had a moment peace in mind.

Later, when they are finishing up a verse of the song, he drunkenly says, "To Ratigan, the world's greatest rat!", which makes Ratigan very mad (as he despises being called a rat). He threw him outside the hideout and summoned Felicia with a bell. However, Bartholomew was too drunk to notice her, and she easily caught and ate him. After a short period of mourning from the other henchmen, Ratigan suggested that they finish the song before he had Felicia eat the rest of them, which they do out of fright.

  • He was voiced by Barrie Ingham, who also voiced Basil of Baker Street in the same movie.
  • Bartholomew and Ratigan are the only characters who die in The Great Mouse Detective.
  • He is the only character in The Great Mouse Detective to have an onscreen death (while Ratigan also died, but it wasn’t shown onscreen).
  • He is the only Thug that wears red (Lavender) in the film (while Bill the Lizard wears green), and the other thugs were brown and black).
  • It is unknown how he is one of Ratigan's thugs since he called him a rat (although it's implied he only called him that due to being completely drunk).
