- “Ah come on, I'm not a monster, all right? I am a demon!”
- ―Beelzebub
Beelzebub is the protagonist of the Disney+/Hulu series Sand Land. He is the Prince of Demons who aids the human Rao in returning water to Sand Land.
Background[]
Personality[]
Beelzebub is a cocky and arrogant "young" demon boy, or "fiend" as they are called, who always acts unimpressed with things that are around him. In actuality, he is very much curious about humans and finds them interesting to be around. Beelzebub is also someone who is easily beckoned into showing off his power and magnitude, of which he is genuinely good. He can be rather impatient and feels threatened when his power is challenged by a worthy adversary. Despite being over 2,500 years old, he still acts like a child and thus has the energy of one.
Beelzebub has a proper moral concept of right and wrong, though he tries not to dwell on it. While he considers himself morally better than any other human, he still claims to be "bad", though his reasoning for it is rather pedestrian. For example, he thinks not brushing his teeth before bed is a prime example of being bad.
Physical appearance[]
Beelzebub is a short, pink skinned, boy with tall spikey hair resembling a multitude of horns, as well as two actual horns perched at the base of his hair, and pointy ears. His usual attire consists of green banned goggles that he wears on his head, white wrist bands, black shorts, a purple play pretend cape, yellow boots and blue socks.
Powers and abilities[]
Being a demon, Beelzebub has numerous abilities, some of which are implied to have been inherited from his father Lucifer.
- Longevity: Despite looking like a pre-teen child, Beelzebub is apparently 2,500 years old, and possibly older.
- Super speed: Beelzebub can move at super speeds. When in the moonlight, his speed enhances significantly.
- Super strength: Beelzebub is incredibly strong to the point that he can easily knock people out with a slap. When in the moonlight, his strength enhances significantly.
- Durability: Beelzebub can withstand major forces, though only to a certain extent. He can harden his body for extra protection.
- Telepathy: Beelzebub has the ability to communicate with others via his mind, which comes in very useful.
- Healing: Beelzebub can rapidly heal from any injury, especially within moonlight which enhances him.
Trivia[]
- In early concept art, Beelzebub was bald and his impish qualities were more radical.
- Beelzebub is voiced by Mutsumi Tamura in the original Japanese version. She is also the Japanese dub voice for Darcy Lewis and Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hansel in Once Upon a Time, Priya Mangal in Turning Red, Tam Ryvora in Star Wars Resistance, Wade Adams in Glee, and Clarisse La Rue in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
- His name comes from the New Testament of the Bible, which was another name for the Devil. The name actually comes from Baal Zebub which means "God of all that flies".
- Akira Toriyama frequently played with devilish imagery in his works, usually portraying them in a light-hearted manner. This is because in Japanese culture, Christianity only makes up a small portion of the population and thus is not taken too seriously. This is partially the reason why Beelzebub is the protagonist of Sand Land and is portrayed as an honorable, yet mischievous, hero.
- Beelzebub also draws inspiration from Sun Wukong from Journey to the West, just like the protagonist from Akira Toriyama's other famous series Dragon Ball, Son Goku.
