Captain Bellamy is a character who was featured in the 2006 Disney live-action film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Background[]
Bellamy served as the captain of the Edinburgh Trader where he was an earnest man. During his life onboard the ship, Bellamy became captain at some unknown point when the ship set out to sea. In addition to his position as a merchant captain, Bellamy showed an honest personality, insisting to make an honest living, albeit deciding not to participate in Tortuga. He also showed a strong dislike against superstition which was common among sailors during his life onboard the Trader, doing his best to eliminate the presence during his duty as the captain.
Role in the film[]
Onboard the Edinburgh Trader, Bellamy served his position as captain of his vessel to which as his crew sailed onto open sea, a sailor found a dress on the main deck, telling his crewmates that he found something unusual, causing the ship's bursar and quartermaster to get an attention to which upon curiously interacting with the dress, the quartermaster then alerted Bellamy about the unusual dress they found which the ship's cook informed the captain that the dress reminds him of a woman. Bellamy, however, attempted to reject the rumors about his ship being haunted by threats, telling his crew to find a stowaway who placed the dress onboard their ship only to find out that the crew never found the stowaway on their ship.
On his cabin, Bellamy complained about his duty in working for the East India Trading Company which the quartermaster replied that the only free port in the area was Tortuga, which Bellamy refused to go to a place infested with pirates in it. Seeing Elizabeth Swann using the dress as a puppet dangling the dress from the mast, Bellamy and his crew mistaken the dress for a spirit where Bellamy and his crew followed the "spirit". Later, another sailor alerted the crew of a message on the ground reading "Tortuga", the name of the only free port Bellamy and his crew could find.
On their way back to Tortuga, Bellamy encountered Will Turner who is at sea, seeing the Kraken attacking the ship with Bellamy becoming its first victim. However, the Kraken grabbed Bellamy and dragged him to his death, leaving the Trader without a captain. Following the captain's death, the surviving crew of the Trader became confused of why the deckhand was acting nervous, which their answer came flying from the ocean with Bellamy being held by one of the Kraken's enormous tentacles, just before being dragged back underwater. The whereabouts of Bellamy are unknown afterwards, as he was probably eaten by the Kraken.
Trivia[]
- It is possible that Bellamy was named after the real-life pirate Samuel Bellamy, although there is little similarity between them.
- In the comic adaptation of Dead Man's Chest, some of Bellamy's dialogues were toned down in the comic, such as his mention to a woman whom the former is in love with while questioning about the strange dress he found, due to mature references. This was likely done to avoid a higher age rating.
