"Beloved" is the fourth episode of the Disney+ streaming television miniseries Secret Invasion and was released on July 12, 2023. It was written by Brian Tucker and directed by Ali Selim.

Synopsis[]

Fury must make some hard sacrifices.

Plot[]

In the aftermath of being shot by Gravik, G'iah manages to survive, as she used Rosa Dalton's knowledge to use the Skrull Power Replicator and gave herself the Extremis regeneration.

In 2012, Nick Fury meets with Varra in Paris, as the two discuss the Battle of New York and Fury's involvement with the Avengers. They both then share a bonding moment, reciting Raymond Carver's Lost Fragment, and getting closer to each other.

In the present, Varra goes to St James's Church, where she talks to Raava, a Skrull that has been impersonating James Rhodes. "Rhodes" tells her that Fury must be killed, but Varra tries to get "him" to reconsider, saying that Fury is no longer a man he used to be and his death is unnecessary. "Rhodes" does not agree and tells her to proceed, while Fury is listening to their conversation via a wiretap. Meanwhile, Gravik and the rest of the Skrull Resistance are preparing for an upcoming attack that they are going to blame the Russians for, while Gravik tells Pagon that G'iah was a mole and had to be killed.

Talos meets with G'iah, blaming himself for putting his daughter in a harm's way, but she insists that she was only acting on her free will. G'iah asks Talos if he has a plan to find a new home for the Skrulls, to which he replies that by thwarting Gravik's insurgency, they will get a favor from the world leaders, which would mean amnesty for the Skrulls and the permission to stay on Earth. G'iah is not pleased with the idea, considering that they would still not be able to live on Earth as themselves, and always keep themselves disguised. Talos tells her that Skrulls can and must earn humans' good will to stay on their planet, to which G'iah calls him delusional and leaves.

Varra returns home, where she encounters Fury, who tells her that marrying her was the biggest mistake of his life. Varra tells him the story of Priscilla Davis, a dying woman whose likeness she assumed. Varra was looking for a woman who could slip through Fury's defenses and asked if Davis wanted to find love before death, and she allowed Varra to take her identity on the promise she would never hurt Fury. Both pull out guns and fire but neither shoot each other, instead shooting past each other. In other words, Varra has betrayed Gravik and might become his target. Varra tells him not to worry and asks would he love her true self, to which he replies that they will never know.

Fury visits "Rhodes" at "his" hotel suite, acting like he still does not know that he's talking to an impostor. Fury informs "him" that Skrulls have infiltrated the U.S. Government and got close to President Ritson himself, proposing to "Rhodes" that he would remain silent in exchange for being reinstated. Instead, "Rhodes" shows him some footage from Moscow of Gravik murdering Maria Hill while disguised as Fury, using it as a leverage to keep Fury quiet. "Rhodes" then leaves, unaware that Fury and Talos are tailing "him", using a liquid tracker in a bourbon that Fury brought. "Rhodes" then welcomes Ritson, who had arrived to England for an emergency peace talks with Russia.

As Ritson is being escorted by the United States Secret Service, "Rhodes" gives Gravik a signal and the Resistance attacks the convoy, posing as Russian soldiers. While Ritson is incapacitated, the Secret Service agents fight the Resistance, but are largely outgunned and cut down until Fury, Talos, and the Special Air Service arrive to aid them. Talos tries to break into the car to get Ritson out, but gets shot in the shoulder by Pagon, which makes it harder to maintain a human form. Wounded and back in his Skrull form, Talos keeps going and eventually gets the unconscious Ritson out of the car.

The SAS soldier comes to Talos' aid, but Fury immediately realizes that he is actually an impostor. He promptly shoots the soldier, who then turns out to be Gravik, before he fatally stabs Talos in the chest. As Talos falls to the ground, Fury empties his gun into Gravik's head, but to his shock, Gravik is barely fazed, merely glaring at Fury as the Extremis heals his bullet wounds. As Gravik and Pagon retreat from the scene upon seeing the approaching cavalry, Fury is forced to evacuate Ritson, leaving Talos' body behind.
