Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch, CBE, is an English actor, producer, and voice actor who is best known for his roles as Smaug and The Necromancer (both motion capture and voice) in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, William Ford in Steve McQueen's historical drama film 12 Years a Slave, Khan Noonien Singh in the 2013 science-fiction action film Star Trek Into Darkness, and as Alan Turing in the historical drama film The Imitation Game, for which he received an nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He currently stars as fictional detective Sherlock Holmes on the BBC crime drama series Sherlock since 2010 with Martin Freeman as Watson.
He has also played Major Jamie Stewart in Steven Spielberg's 2011 war drama film, War Horse, and Julian Assange in Bill Condon's 2013 biographical thriller film, The Fifth Estate, which were both under the Touchstone Films banner. Cumberbatch voiced as the titular main protagonist, the Grinch, of Universal/Illumination's 2018 computer animated film of the very same name, The Grinch.
He plays the titular Doctor Strange in the Marvel Studios film of the same name, in Thor: Ragnarok, in Avengers: Infinity War, in Avengers: Endgame, and in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He also performed motion capture for Dormammu in Doctor Strange.
