"Beyond Repair" is the seventh episode of the Disney+ series American Born Chinese.
Synopsis[]
Jin finds himself in trouble at school as Wei-Chen tries to rescue his father from the Bull Demon.
Plot[]
Jamie Yao visits the set of Beyond Repair for the reunion and runs into his costar Robin who is happy to see him. During the taping, Jamie happily reunites with the cast before the host shows them clips from the meme that came from his character. While everyone laughs, Jamie is noticeably indifferent. The hosts asks him what it is like to be a television icon, but he seems to stall on an answer.
Jin and Wei-Chen regroup outside the bowling alley and head off to go see Guanyin. They are disappointed to learn that the jade pendant is not the fourth scroll and they cannot even use it to barter as Pixiu ate it. Wei-Chen tells Jin that he is no longer needed as a guide, making him feel sad. Despite this, Wei-Chen decides to go rescue his father while Guanyin wishes him luck and returns to Heaven. Niu Mowang is keeping Sun Wukong in the basement of the Golden Temple while the mirror piece is still lodged in him. Privately, Wukong tells Ji Gong that it is not too late for him to turn, but he ignores him.
Jin begins to miss Wei-Chen and when Christine drives him to school, she tells him that she is going to visit her sister Elaine for a while. Jin suspects that Christine is separating from Simon, making him feel disoriented. He goes to school and does not respond to Coach Garrett telling him that he has made midfielder and struggles to explain what is happening to Amelia. When the school mascot begins to interact with him, Jin shoves him into a locker and he is immediately sent to the principal's office.
While waiting outside, Anuj sends Jin a video of his pratfall on TV along with the Beyond Repair interview. Jamie responds to the question and admits that he did not walk away from acting, he walked away from Hollywood. He had hoped to be cast in heroic roles, but he wound up getting cast as neighbors, nerds and ninjas instead. He hopes that the message he can send to young actors is that anyone can be a hero regardless of how they look or sound.
Simon and Christine arrive to talk to Principal Finney, during which it is apparent that Finney has a set idea as to who the "Wangs" (pronounced literally) are like and makes inconsiderate suggestions. Simon finally speaks up and corrects her beliefs about them as well as how to pronounce their name. Jin is sent back to class while Christine makes it obvious that she is not leaving after all. As they leave, Christine thanks Simon for finally speaking up for them and he points out that they both have changed, but can be better people.
Mowang drags Wukong out as he tries to apologize for turning him into something he is not, but Mowang thanks him for making him accept himself. Wei-Chen arrives, but Mowang figures out that not only does he not have the pendant, but that he also still does not know if the fourth scroll is real. He proceeds to beat up Wei-Chen, but Gong protects him. Mowang angrily destroys the paintings as Wukong and Gong force Wei-Chen to leave. Gong gives Wei-Chen some beads before fleeing as Mowang uses the Jingu Bang to finish off Wukong, forcing Wei-Chen to run.

Trivia[]
- The title is a reference to the dated 90s sitcom that is frequently mentioned throughout the season.
- Jamie Yao's speech somewhat mirrors Ke Huy Quan's 2023 Oscar acceptance speech. Oddly enough, the episode was filmed before he had won the award, making the moment feel prophetic.
