Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation is an animated musical film based on the Disney Channel animated series Big City Greens. It premiered on the Disney Channel on June 6, 2024 and on Disney+ on June 7, 2024.
Synopsis[]
When thrill-seeker Cricket Green tricks his country family into taking a "road trip" in space, chaos in the cosmos ensues! Despite growing frustrations between Cricket and his dad, the two must learn to appreciate each other's unique perspectives in order to prevent Big City from being destroyed by an asteroid.
Plot[]
The Green Family are planning another road trip with Nancy agreeing to stay and watch the house. However, when Bill insists on doing the exact same road trip as last year, Cricket gets fed up and argues against it. The family take a brief detour to Big Tech to deliver produce to Gwendolyn Zapp who is in the midst of unveiling her latest project: a space hotel and an accompanying asteroid with farm silos. Cricket is enamored, but the cost of staying at the hotel is exorbitant; exemplified with Remy and his family staying at it. When Zapp learns that the farmbots that were supposed to maintain the crops are malfunctioning, she offers to send the Greens up, but Bill turns her down. Cricket however informs Zapp that Bill was playing hard to get and that they will take the job on the condition that they get to stay at the hotel.
Cricket tricks the family into going on the spaceship by informing them that it is a simulator. They of course figure it out once they are already up in space and Bill is nearly sucked out. They are aided by Commander Colleen Voyd, a staunch astronaut who hangs by Zapp's every word and insists on following protocol. Cricket manages to entice Tilly and Gramma Alice to spend vacation in space by giving Alice a robotic leg (after her regular one got destroyed by the g-force) and Tilly, an electronic recording device (after her diary got sucked into space). Additionally, Tilly encounters "failed experiment 83", a small green gooey life form that destroys glass, whom she names Cookie. Alice aids Cricket in trapping Voyd in one of the cryo-chambers, which Tilly reluctantly agrees to as well, before convincing Bill to have fun with them.
Meanwhile on earth, Nancy visits Gloria at work. Gloria wants to impress Nancy and self-titles themselves the "dream team", much to Nancy's consternation. They see on the news the fate of the Greens and Nancy rushes to Big Tech to confront Zapp. Zapp kicks her out and bans her from the facility, forcing Nancy to team up with Gloria to get in. They are both captured where Zapp reveals her true intention behind the mission: she wants to prove that she can farm in space in order to impress her Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Kay who called her dream a "fantasy". The Greens arrive on the farming asteroid where they are attacked by the farmbots. They manage to escape back to the ship where Tilly and Alice free Voyd from stasis. Rather than help escape, Voyd uses the only escape pod to send the produce back to Zapp, but later informs them that there is a way to stop the farmbots.
The group traverse across the asteroid and make it to the energy compound. They crash through the dome as Cricket pulls the kill switch to shut off the farmbots. However, Zapp reveals that their actions have caused the silos across the asteroid to explode, dislodging the asteroid from orbit and could send it on a collision course to Big City. Cricket and Bill get into an argument over how the former always comes up with crazy ideas. Cricket concludes that this means that Bill does not like him and therefore he does not like him either. They are unable to prevent the compound from exploding and the entire group is separated in space. On earth, Zapp gets the produce to show off to Mrs. Kay, but is unfulfilled, causing her to leave in her own escape pod to Mars. Nancy and Gloria manage to escape and take control of Alice's robotic leg to rescue the family.
The Greens and Voyd are reunited with Cricket and Bill both coming to the conclusion that they were harsh to one another. Voyd decides to help the Greens after learning that Zapp abandoned them all. They head to the space hotel to use the tractor beam to capture the asteroid, but Cricket is forced to turn the beam manually. With not enough power to pull it, Cricket has to turn up three large switches to increase the power. This is complicated by the arrival of the space trash, which Zapp had earlier mentioned. Bill uses Cookie to shatter the glass as he flies into space and uses a disused road sign to protect Cricket who pulls the final switch, stopping the asteroid moments before it touches down on Big City.
As the asteroid gets pulled back, the group realizes that the asteroid is now on a collision course with the space hotel. With Remy's help, the group convinces all the guests to conga line into escape pods. As Voyd parts with the Greens, Tilly leaves Cookie with her as a companion. While they wait for the rescue ship to arrive for them, the Greens decide to ride across space so as to fulfill their vacation.
During the credits, Zapp attempts to get back into everyone's good graces with no success, Alice gets her old leg back, Nancy lets Gloria drive her motorcycle, Voyd and Cookie lead a new group of astronauts to clean space, and the Greens happily resume their old life. A cowboy narrator, who opened the movie, breaks the fourth wall again to tell people to watch the show.
