Benjimin "Big D. Donovan is a Marvel Comics who appears in the animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. He is the former leader of the 110th Street Gang, before being succeeded by Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone.
Background[]
At first glance, Big Donovan is seen as quite intimidating as Lonnie appears afraid of him when he meets him. He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, even if it means pushing people around and can easily blackmail people into getting what he wants. However, deep down he seems to be quite nervous and can get scared of his enemies, especially the Scorpion, who almost kills Donovan. This fear even makes him selfishly run away and abandon the 110, leaving them to face the Scorpions alone, as long as he is safe.
Role in the series[]
Big Donovan is first introduced in "Secret Identity Crisis" when he confronts Lonnie Lincoln for entering the 110th Street Gang hideout, who tries to get his younger brother, Andre, to leave as he is part of the gang. Donovan blackmails Lincoln into replacing his brother in the gang, which Lonnie reluctantly agrees.
While leading the gang, Donovan treats Lonnie badly, making fun of him by nicknaming him "superstar", much to Lincoln's annoyance. Big Donovan is mostly seen interfering with Lonnie's school work and his football practice, by sending in the gang's members to retrieve him. Donovan's way of leading gets too much for Lonnie as he is forced to leave the football team because he spends so much time with the 110.
During a fight between the 110 and the Scorpion's gang, Big Donovan is almost killed by the leader, Matt Gurgan before he is saved by Lonnie. As a thank you, Donovan shows more respect to Lonnie and nicknames him Tombstone, which Lincoln much prefers. The 110 wins the fight and returns to the hideout, where Lonnie is discovered by his girlfriend Pearl Pangan. However, before Lonnie can explain, the hideout is ambushed by the Scorpion and Donovan and the members can only watch as one of the members is killed, just before Spider-Man arrives to save them.
In "Tangled Web", the One Tenths meet with benefactor, Dmitri, who is now under the alias Chameleon, who reveals the whereabouts of Octavius's old lab, though he warns them that they have to move quickly. Not long after this, the One Tenths decide to steal a compound from an Oscorp truck and are stopped by Spider-Man, but the Scorpions and Gargan return. During a fight, Donovan becomes scared and flees the scene, despite Tombstone's attempts to get him to stay. Donovan drives off and abandons the 110, leading Tombstone to become the new leader.
