Birtwick Stables is a location featured in the 2020 Disney+ original film Black Beauty.
Background[]
Birtwick Stables is located in Birtwick Park in New York. It is a horse sanctuary that rehabilitates horses rescuing them from mistreatment or for rescuing horses in danger. The location not only includes horse stables but also a shack where Jo Green and her uncle John Manly live. In addition to them who work in this sanctuary, Birtwick was also staffed by James, who works as a stable boy followed by other workers. Workers doing their routine at Birtwick cannot be distracted during their duties in the stables, especially when it comes to tending to the horses in their enclosures.
After a fire broke out in Birtwick, the stable where the horses lived was damaged, resulting in Jo to accumulate enough money to help rebuild the stables so that she could see Black Beauty again. Seven years later, Jo was able to save Birtwick about to be bankrupt so that she would be able to see Beauty again.
Role in the film[]
After John Manly rescued Black Beauty from a corral, he was able to bring her to a safe place at Birtwick Stables. Although Beauty shows a like with John, she refuses to cooperate, although John remains patient. However, that evening, John's niece Jo Green returns from school in a bad mood when she refused to eat dinner with her uncle.
The next day, John approaches his niece telling her that Black Beauty was taken away from her family in the wild, albeit Jo still in a bad mood just before going to school. John also feels stressed about the frustration he had between Jo and Black Beauty especially during while working as a horse trainer in the stables. However, one day, John hands his niece Jo a book, "Two Spirits Converge - The Art of the Horse" which his mentor gave to him which he thinks it would help her talk to horses. Just as Jo attempts to bond with Beauty, James feels worried and tells John that Beauty would charge against her only to find out that she is gently bonding with her. That evening, John offers his niece Jo to buy steaks for dinner which she decides not to talk after feeling upset about the death of her parents still feeling pragmatic about the tragic moment she had.
The next day, John hires his niece to work at Birtwick; just as Jo tames her, she tells Beauty that her uncle says that she is safe, just as Beauty adapts her life in living in the stables; however, as John plans to sell her, he explains to his niece that he doesn't own the stables, as the conservancy part is to train and adopt a few mustangs a year and not to keep them. John later became aware of his niece riding on Beauty which he reacts in shock, leading John, James, and Gordon to try to make sure Jo is safe which Jo and Beauty got the hang of their home together.
After the summer ended, Beauty narrates that she liked John that much, despite being heavy to ride on her. Suddenly, John approaches a new groom, telling him to avoid getting distracted on his phone while working at the ranch. One night, John noticed his niece Jo attempting to rescue Beauty and the other horses trapped by the fire in the stable, which Jo managed to get the horses out of the stable. The next day, John approaches his niece and tells her that saving Birtwick is not that easy, even after the fire that damaged the stable, just as Jo makes a deal to find a way to save Beauty after the fire.
Later, John goes into a conversation with the Winthorp family where he introduces them to Black Beauty and the other horses just before the other horses are sent to Earlshall Park. John discusses with his niece that sending Beauty and the other horses being transported to Earlshall Park would be a safer place just before Jo leaves. John approaches his niece at Earlshall, who tells her the bad news that Birtwick Stables is closing down. Back at Birtwick, John shares his story with his niece, telling her that he rescued a mustang from the Bureau of Land Management and named him "Beau", but later felt emotional when he gave him away, just as Jo tries to bring back Black Beauty so she can be reunited again by planning to save a lot of money to find her.
Seven years later, Jo began to write a letter to her uncle, telling him that she was working extra shifts to save enough money to find Beauty, but could not find her, just as she continued to search for Beauty while writing a letter to John as well as saving enough money to rebuild Birtwick. Furthermore, John approaches Jo who reunites with Beauty at the Midtown Stables just as John was able to rescue her and bring her back to Birtwick Stables, which was saved from bankruptcy. John later brings Beauty to the home when she was meant to be, making her happy once again. The next day, Jo was reunited with Beauty in her stable, with Birtwick suddenly reopened and saved from bankruptcy just before Beauty continues narrating about the place where she was meant to be.
