"Blow the Man Down" is an English sea shanty featured in various Disney productions, including the 1938 short film "Boat Builders", the 1940 short film "Tugboat Mickey" and the 1971 feature film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Originally written sometime in the early 18th-century, the song's title most likely referred to a common mishap at sea during the age of sail wherein a strong and sudden gale would catch a ship with its topsails fully set.
The song was also used in the Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired album, Disney's Ultimate Swashbuckler 10-Song CD Collection albeit with alternate lyrics (such as replacing "Kicking Jack Williams" for "Captain Jack Sparrow" to fit the album's theme).
Lyrics[]
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
Way aye blow the man down
Oh, blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!
As I was a-walking down Paradise Street
Way aye blow the man down
A pretty young damsel I chanced for to meet
Give me some time to blow the man down!
She was round in the counter and bluff in the bow,
Way aye blow the man down
So I took in all sail and cried, “Way enough now”
Give me some time to blow the man down!
So I tailed her my flipper and took her in tow
Way aye blow the man down
And yardarm to yardarm away we did go
Give me some time to blow the man down!
But as we were going she said unto me
Way aye blow the man down
“There's a spanking full-rigger just ready for sea”
Give me some time to blow the man down!
But as soon as that packet was clear of the bar
Way aye blow the man down
The mate knocked me down with the end of a spar
Give me some time to blow the man down!
It's starboard and larboard on deck you will sprawl
Way aye blow the man down
For Kicking Jack Williams commands the Black Ball
Give me some time to blow the man down!
So I give you fair warning before we belay,
Way aye blow the man down
Don't ever take head of what pretty girls say
Give me some time to blow the man down!
Blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
Blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!
(All right! Gather, 'round mateys! I've got a tale to tell!)
As I was a-walking down Paradise Street
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
A pretty young damsel I chanced for to meet
Give me some time to blow the man down!
So I gave her me flipper and took her in tow
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
And yardarm to yardarm away we did go
Give me some time to blow the man down!
(Now, all right! Now, I'm just gettin' started!)
But as we were going she said unto me
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
“There's a sparkling full-rigger just ready for sea”
Give me some time to blow the man down!
So just as that lasts, and I reached not too far
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
The mate knocked me down with the end of a spar
Give me some time to blow the man down!
It's starboard and larboard on deck you will sprawl
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
For Captain Jack Sparrow commands the Black Pearl
Give me some time to blow the man down!
And so I was shanghaied aboard this old ship
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
She took all me money and gave me the slip
Give me some time to blow the man down!
So I give you fair warning before we belay,
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
Don't ever take heed of what pretty girls say
Give me some time to blow the man down!
Blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
And aweigh, hey, blow the man down
Blow the man down, bullies, blow him away
Give me some time to blow the man down!
Give me some time to blow the man down!
(And every one of it's true!)
