The Blowfish is a character from the 1934 Silly Symphony short Peculiar Penguins.

Background[]

Personality[]

The blowfish is shown to have an aggressive personality to predators that attempt to eat him, especially when it comes to penguins. During the case of Peter Penguin attempting to catch a fish for Polly, a fish alerted him that there is a penguin attempting to eat him, which made the blowfish angry about this. He also occasionally inflates himself as a means of self-defense from other enemies, although he does not use it whenever a penguin catches him, such as when Peter caught him to be Polly's food. Unaware of that, the blowfish is also capable of inflating himself whenever a penguin consumes him, showing that he dislikes being eaten by other predators.

Physical appearance[]

The blowfish has a pale orange coloration on his body as well as a pale gray coloration on the top of his body (also overlapping his dorsal fin) as well as having a pair of pink fins and a pink tail. He is also shown to have three purple spots located on both sides as well as having a white underbelly. He is also shown to have a pair of yellow eyes with black pupils in both of them.

Role in the short[]

The blowfish is first seen when Peter planned to get food for Polly in the ocean and just as he eats a rock, a singular fish bites him and alerts the blowfish that there is a penguin trying to eat him. Furious about this, inflates himself and becomes angry about this. Peter grabs the blowfish, unaware that he could use his inflation ability, just as he delivers him to Polly. When Polly eats the blowfish, it causes her to inflate, feeling uncomfortable of the most unusual fish she ever ate. Seeing that the inflation made it even worse, Polly started moving uncontrollably, only for her to hit a ledge. Peter manages to get the blowfish out of Polly, causing her to spit him out. As he stares at the penguins, he inflates himself to show a warning not to catch fish like him just before leaping back into the ocean. He does not appear again afterwards.

Trivia[]

  • In real life, blowfish are found only in warmer waters, unlike the one seen in Peculiar Penguins, which is set in set in Antarctica.
