The Blue Bayou Lagoon (or simply Blue Bayou) is a location from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Disney Parks.
Background[]
The Blue Bayou is a swamp located within the city of New Orleans in Louisiana. Most of the people who live in this swamp live in houseboats and elevated shacks within the swamp. During nighttime, the swamp would be filled with fireflies flying across the swamp while a swamp dweller would play a tune on their banjo. Creatures that inhabit this swamp can consist of crickets, frogs, toads, alligators, and many types of waterfowl hidden throughout the swamp as any rider drifted to a stone wall of a canal leading to a brick channel into a dark area.
Within the canal, there is a bricked passage containing an undead skull of a dead pirate. It is unknown who placed the skull within the passage. However, the skull appears to have some mystic powers. The dark area would lead to a dark and mysterious grotto known as "Dead Man's Cove" via misty waterfall.
Points of Interest[]
- Lafitte's Landing: A landing located within the Blue Bayou. It is an area where people would ride on a boat through the bayou. This landing is named after Jean Lafitte.
- Blue Bayou Restaurant: A 19th century restaurant located within New Orleans located by Lafitte's Landing.
Appearances[]
Pirates of the Caribbean[]
The Blue Bayou scene in the Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland versions is the first scene that guests pass through when they board on their boats. Just as the boats travel across the swamp, fireflies and alligators can be seen as well as a shack where an old man in the bayou appears sitting on his rocking chair. Passing by the shack, the boats suddenly end up in the canal where they suddenly encounter an undead skull of a dead pirate within the canal. As the guests pass by the skull, he tells the guests to hold on tight, leading them to the first drop as they end up in Dead Man's Cove, followed by a second drop.
The Princess and the Frog[]
The Blue Bayou Lagoon makes a small appearance in the end credits of The Princess and the Frog, referencing the fact that Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland is located in New Orleans Square since The Princess and the Frog is set in New Orleans.
Other Appearances[]
Kinect: Disneyland Adventures[]
The first part of the Pirates of the Caribbean level focuses on the player rowing across the Blue Bayou guided by Black Barty who serves as their guide. Throughout the level, the player must row their boat across the bayou while repelling alligators and avoiding explosive barrels along the way.
Trivia[]
- The fireflies located within the bayou have since become a guest favorite over the years[1].
- This scene only appears in the Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland versions of the attraction and not in the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Paris versions of the attraction.
- The fact that the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction was constructed at the New Orleans Square area at Disneyland including a swamp scene and New Orleans Square having a New Orleans theme is a possible reference to swamps being abundant in the state of Louisiana where New Orleans is at.
- The bayou scene from the original attraction may have inspired the Pantano River in the 2006 Disney film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. The fireflies outside Tia Dalma's shack are an homage to the ones from the original attraction.
- In the non-canon video game Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life, one of the locations, "The Whispering Bayou" is a reimagining of the Pantano River, which contains elements from the Blue Bayou. Additionally, there is a wrecked ship named the Blue Bayou in the same area, in reference to the Pantano River being influenced by the Blue Bayou area in the original Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.
