1- Than ever, maybe not. But then again, it wasn't never preferred over 2D animation anyway. 2-It's a quirky and visually appealing style, thus there's always a Wes Anderson or an Aardman/Laika to keep stop motion alive. 3- The dolls make for something more palpable than drawn/digital cartoons. And seeing what resembles either toys or clay moving is always eye-catching, along with so tiresome to make you respect the animators. 4- Chicken Run, it's hilarious and I particularly like how makers made it really close to actual war movies (The Great Escape in particular).
