I guess writers were probably in a hurry to get the film completed so they didn't seem to do they research. Really, all they had to do was write/create a half decent plot, characters, etc and then the rest of the crew had to storyboard and animate it, which was the hard, exspensive part. They knew it wasn't going to be a Disney canon masterpiece film like say, the original Peter Pan.
