Boreas is a character from the Disney animated series, Gargoyles.
Background[]
Boreas serves as the leader of the New Olympians. He is shown to resemble a muscular bearded man wearing traditional Greek clothing - specifically resembling Zeus from Greek mythology. He also wields a large staff tipped with crossed lightning bolts which he uses to deliver thunderbolts that he can channel at will.
Role in the series[]
In "The New Olympians", Boreas approaches Goliath, Angela, and Bronx who enter the Senate House where he introduces himself to them while Goliath replies to him that they arrived with a human (in this case, Elisa Maza). Later after Ekidna tells the Senate House public about what humans did to the ancestors of the New Olympians years ago, Boreas replies that the ancestors of the New Olympians fled the human world to create the kingdom of New Olympus to be safe, which Goliath replies to him that he has nothing to do with Elisa being a threat, planning to vouch with her. As Goliath speaks in front of Boreas, he explains to him that Elisa is trustworthy and kept Goliath's secret in the human world, which Ekidna replies that should Goliath that if he should expect her to trust Elisa, this would result a backfire on the New Olympians. Boreas then speaks to Elisa, whom he thinks she is sincere, but cannot guarantee any chances with safety in New Olympus which Talos replies to Boreas that New Olympus might need human allies, believing that Elisa might be eligible to protect New Olympus, explaining to Boreas that the cloaking device will not be effective much longer.
After Talos replies, Boreas asks Taurus to know what his advise which the latter replies that his ancestor the Minotaur was killed by a human hero known as "Theseus", fearing that humans are a threat to New Olympians. As a loud protest by the rioting audience rises, Boreas silences them pounding his staff of lightning, delivering out a speech that Elisa has not come to harm the Olympians, but cannot allow her to return to the outside world; however, Boreas tells the gargoyles that they may leave New Olympus while Elisa should remain their guest permanently.
Later, Goliath, Angela, and Bronx approach Boreas, explaining to him about his treatment of Elisa, which Boreas replies to them that he heard about the riot, explaining to them about Taurus putting Elisa which Angela replies to him that Elisa didn't intentionally start the fight just as Boreas replies to the three that this is a necessary precaution for Elisa's safety as well. After Proteus was defeated and having Elisa's bad reputation was dealt with, Boreas watches Elisa leaving New Olympus where Taurus realizes that Elisa is not being a threat to New Olympus after he allowed her to leave with the Manhattan Clan. When Taurus tells Boreas that all of New Olympus will not be able to hide forever, the latter replies to him that the time may soon come when the world will have to face the New Olympians.
Trivia[]
- Boreas is named after the Greek god of the north wind of the same name. The way Boreas is depicted as a winged human may be derived that in mythology, Boreas had two sons by Athenian princess Oreithiya named Calais and Zetes respectively who appeared as winged men who accompanied Jason and the Argonauts on the Quest for the Golden Fleece.
