Bouc is a character who appears in the 2017 film Murder on the Orient Express and its 2022 sequel Death on the Nile. He is portrayed by British actor Tom Bateman.
Appearance[]
Bouc is a Belgian friend and countryman of Hercule Poirot, the famous detective. He is also a high-ranking employee of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, the company that operates the Orient Express train. In Murder on the Orient Express, he helps Poirot secure a cabin on the train and assists him in solving the murder of Edward Ratchett, who is revealed to be Cassetti, the kidnapper and killer of Daisy Armstrong. Bouc is described as a "short, stout, elderly man" in the novel, but he is depicted as a young and handsome man in the film.
In Death on the Nile, Bouc returns as one of the guests invited to the wedding celebration of Simon and Linnet Doyle, a wealthy couple who are honeymooning on a river steamer in Egypt. He introduces Poirot to the other passengers and provides him with some background information. He is also in love with Rosalie Otterbourne, the niece of Salome Otterbourne, a blues singer and former actress. Bouc's role in this film is expanded from that of Tim Allerton, a character from the novel who does not appear in the film. Bouc is killed by Jacqueline de Bellefort, Simon's ex-fiancée and one of the conspirators in Linnet's murder, during his interview with Poirot.
Bouc's character serves as a foil and a companion to Poirot, as he often expresses his admiration for Poirot's skills and his opinions on the suspects. He also provides some comic relief with his humorous remarks and reactions. He is loyal, friendly, and romantic, but also naive, impulsive, and prejudiced at times. He has a close relationship with his mother Euphemia, an artist who travels with him.
