History[]
Development[]
The Bride of Frankenstein was a concept that originated from the original novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. Frankenstein's Monster demands from his creator that he create a mate for him, but he backs out out of fear over what the two of them would do. The Bride is never actually made.
It wasn't until 1935, that a sequel to the 1931 film adaptation of Frankenstein, titled Bride of Frankenstein, that such a character would appear, played by Elsa Lanchester. Despite the character only appearing in the final minutes of the film, she has gone on to become a cultural icon, particularly her unusual hairstyle.
There have only been two other movies that delve into the concept further, the 1985 film The Bride, starring Jennifer Beals, and the 1994 film Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, which featured Helena Bonham Carter as Elizabeth becoming the creature.
