Brook Ripple is a character in the 2023 Disney/Pixar animated feature film Elemental. She is the widowed mother of Wade Ripple.
Background[]
- “Brook Ripple is Wade’s loving and supportive mom. She's wildly driven and successful with an eye for talent and a guiding hand. An architect with boundless empathy for the plights of others, Brook never passes up an opportunity for a good cry. In fact, her whole family is tender-hearted—sharing feelings and expressing emotion is the name of the game in the Ripple household.”

Personality[]
Brook is very supportive of her family. Both she and Wade are very sensitive and tend to cry a lot. She also doesn't have anything against fire elements, as she warmly welcomed Ember in her home as Wade's guest. She also disapproves prejudice or insensitive comments from other elements such as discriminatory remarks about Fire Elementals, shown when she gave her brother, Harold a glare for making insensitive comment on Ember's native fire language.
A doting mother, she's not above teasing Wade about his feelings for Ember. She also cares about Wade's happiness as she accepted his relationship with Ember whole heartedly, wanted him to travel the world after Ember seemingly rejected him, and encouraged him to leave Elemental City with Ember to experience life outside the city.
As an architect, Brook is very creative, though she wishes to not to receive any credit for her work. She also is capable of recognizing potential in other elements when she saw Ember's capability in making glass sculptures when she fixed the broken pitcher. As a result, Brook sought to give Ember an opportunity to express her talent in glassmaking, believing the fire element had the potential to express her art to the world.
Physical appearance[]
Being a water element, Brook's body is made of translucent turquoise blue water, forming a tall and lean body, complete with dark turquoise blue eyebrows, various waves that resemble curly hair on her head, and aquamarine eyes.
She wears a long light blue dress with some darker streaks that go down it and a dark blue sash tied around her waist, a gold necklace with dark blue stones, which has one triangular stone in the middle and drop shaped stones on the right and left sides, and blue drop-shaped earrings.
Role in the film[]
Brook is first seen approaching her son Wade as well as Ember who is visiting Wade's apartment just as Brook directs them to meet the rest of her family. She then later replies to Lake and Ghibli that she is an architect while Harold is the real painter, just as she describes him as a wonderful painter, recapping that one of his paintings was exhibited in the Element City Museum's permanent collection. Brook explains to Ember that her only talent is "Clean up on aisle four" just as Wade replies to Brook about Ember's fiery creativity.
After Alan accidentally breaks the pitcher he is using, Ember uses her fiery ability to fix the broken pitcher, impressing Brook and the rest of the Ripples. As Ember tells Brook about the melted glass, Brook replies that every building in the city is built from just melted glass, telling her to do something using her talent. After dinner, Brook and the rest of the Ripple family participate in the Crying Game as suggested by Wade. Later when Wade tells Ember that the light inside her made him feel like that he wants her to be near him, Brook and the rest of the Ripples emotionally react to Ember and Wade's relationship
Just before leaving, Brook shows Ember the pitcher that she repaired, impressed by her talent, explaining that she has a friend who runs the best glassmaking firm in the world, explaining that Brook's friend is looking for an intern, which would give Ember an amazing opportunity, telling her that she has a bright future in her.
During the climax of the film, Brook and the rest of the Ripples are seen bidding a farewell to Wade who is leaving just before Wade's relatives began crying together, only for Wade to notice Ember in danger, due to the water bursting through the glass wall Ember made, flowing through the canal. At the end of the film, Brook emotionally bids a farewell to Wade who is leaving Element City with Ember so that the latter can study glassmaking while traveling the world together.
Trivia[]
- Her first name comes from the name "brook", a small river or stream of fresh water.
- In an earlier version of the film, Brook was to be the head of the water works in Element City and serve as the antagonist, with her goal being to run a water way through Firetown. This concept was dropped because the writers felt that it detracted from the love story.[1]
