Buzz Lightyear is the titular protagonist of the 2022 Disney•Pixar animated film Lightyear. In the film, Buzz is a space ranger who protects and explores the galaxy.
He is based on the character of the same name from the Toy Story franchise, and is the in-universe inspiration for the toy.

Personality[]
Originally, Buzz started off as a practical, resilient, arrogant, insufferable, stubborn, somewhat rude, petulant, and a single-minded jerk who was hostile towards rookies and hated Autopilots as he thought that they don't help but overcomplicate things. However despite all this, he was emotional and always cared for others such as his former partner Alisha Hawthorne and had a tear dropping from his eye when looking at a photo of him and her together after her tragic passing. He even had a good intention with helping Star Command find their way home.
Buzz was also a dutiful ranger with a habit of doing things on his own and makes mission logs to help him focus which causes him to do mistakes, like he unintentionally crashes the Turnip. He was also willing to take full responsibility for his actions, to the point that he offers to have himself stripped of his rank. Despite his stubbornness, Buzz is shown to be wise as he recalled his time as a Space Ranger cadet and how he didn't fit in.
Later on in the film, Buzz softens even more and at the end when offered the ZAP Patrol as his team by Commander Burnside, he politely declines his offer and instead takes Sox, Izzy, Mo and as his team and even saw them as his best friends.
Role in the film[]
On a trip to an uncharted planet, Buzz and the crew of the Turnip become stranded on that planet. Their only hope of getting off the planet is to rebuild their ship and begin experimenting hyperspeed propulsion systems powered by crystallic fusion. Buzz is chosen to be the test pilot. But during these flight tests, Buzz quickly learns upon his arrival back he experiences time dilation. Four years pass for him after a four minute flight.
The hyperspeed test flights eventually take him eighty-nine years into the future, where he meets a personal companion robot cat named Sox and Izzy Hawthorne, granddaughter of his best friend, Alisha, and her companions Mo Morrison and Darby Steel, who seek his help against an evil robot named Zurg, who leads an army of robot soldiers and is revealed to be Buzz from an alternate future.
After Zurg is defeated, Buzz accepts T'Kani Prime as his home and following the permission to relive the Space Ranger Corps, Buzz selects Izzy, Mo, Darby, and Sox as his team. With the team officially formed, they embark on a new adventure with a new fuel crystal, and unknown to Buzz, Zurg is later revealed to have survived the explosion.

Trivia[]
- This Buzz variant is the "original" character which inspired the toy Buzz Lightyear, which is featured in the Toy Story franchise, voiced by Tim Allen.
- However, the director of Lightyear, Angus MacLane, claimed that the toy version of Buzz was based on a Buzz Lightyear cartoon yet unseen to the audience, not the former itself. That being said, the director does note that he views the in-universe series as not having been produced yet, seemingly establishing Lightyear as having come out within the Toy Story timeline sometime before the events of the original film and, therefore, the previous Buzz spinoffs.[1]
- This is the first version of Buzz to have his hair revealed, whereas he is never seen without wearing his purple cap in other media.
- Although other depictions of Buzz's fictional home planet is the planet of Morph, this version of him comes from Earth and there has been no mention of planet Morph in Lightyear.
- Much like his toy counterpart, his helmet is able to go all the way inside his suit, which is very inconsistent as it would take up so much space inside the suit for his body.
- He doesn't get his toy counterpart's identical-looking signature space ranger suit until the end of the film.
- In video games such as Disney Sorcerer's Arena and Disney Emoji Blitz, he is referred as Captain Lightyear.
